Noisy Newborn

My 5 week old baby is a really noisy sleeper. He sleeps soundly for the first part of the night, say 11pm - 3am, but after he's been fed in the early hours he grunts and groans continuously for the next few hours until he is lifted in the morning. He is asleep but it's not restful, and we can't sleep listening to him.
I ' m not sure why he does this and I wonder if someone can reassure me that it's normal. I have very fast let down and flow so thought it might be wind, and I do my best to wind him but it makes no difference. The health visitor has also suggested silent reflux but lifting the head of the cot and gaviscon (when we can get it into him) make no difference.
Any advice or reassurance appreciated - thanks

hi there, we had this in those early weeks. I recorded her because I couldn't believe it was normal, I showed the health visitor. It was normal according to her. Dd never suffered any ills we are aware of and it did end. Can't remember when though. She used to sound like an elephant. Quite a noise from such a small (asleep) person!

We also had this with DS (now 9mo). He was very noisy and like a snuffly pig next to the bed! I believe it is entirely normal and I think he stopped around 10-12 weeks. I had to start putting my ipod on to go to sleep to to drown out the noise!!

My twins sounded like a farmyard when they were newborns! I was amazed at how much noise they made. I think the noises stopped around 3 months.

Yes newborns grunt a lot. We got used to it. One night MIL slept for a part of the night next to DS and couldn't believe how noisy he was. We had tuned out to it by then. Grew out of it by about 4 months.

Yup, was like trying to sleep next to a wild animal, I was convinced that he was upset but he was just sleeping! They grow out of it - phew!

My daughter is exactly the same. We now wear ear plugs which have been a life saver. It blocks out the snuffling enough for us to sleep. I think she sleeps better too as we are not all disturbing each other. We can still hear her wake when she wants food etc. But they do help just take the edge of the noise off.

DD was like a horse. I moved her to her own room at a few weeks- may be four and used a monitor. This was before the new advice about six months in the same room. If you don't have any risk factors it might be worth discussing with your GP or health visitor.

Thanks for the advice folks. I'm reassured it's not just my wee one. Might try some ear plugs to start with.....

Hi, mine has just started to do this over the last few days. He's 10 days old today. He sounds like he's in pain sometimes as it can lead to crying but not for very long. He does, like some of you say, sound like a baby elephant!! I started picking him up if it gets really bad and he seems to poop/fart with less bother, gravity helps perhaps? Good idea to record it! My MW coming tmrw and HV Monday so will show them

MaMaPo · 11/07/2014 04:41

Oh god, nothing noisier than a wee sleeping baby. Ours sounded like a goat. I used to sleep (or try to) with one earplug in because she was so loud.

Definitely normal, in my experience!

PrettyReckless · 11/07/2014 04:55

Totally normal!

I had a noisy cat in my room, you know the noise you sometimes here outside when 2 cats fight? That was my dd. she was nicknamed accordingly Grin

They eventually grow out of it
