All my dc have summer duvets, so they are not so heavy, in the winter they keep warm with flannellete (sp) sheets and warm pjs.

hermykne · 10/09/2006 21:17

dd is 4 has the debenhams one for kids 6.5 tog, ithnk
ds is 2 and his is 2.5 for a cot size, but he'll need something warmer, but he aint coming out of the cot just yet

Yeah mine have the 4.5 tog ones at moment but dd needed a blanket as well last winter. Thought I might get her a 9 tog as she feels the cold a lot.

DD (2) has the 9 and is in the colder room, DS (4) has the 4/4.5. They were bought as a button together duvet.

cece · 10/09/2006 21:51

are there any guidlines for when to use warmer duvets though?

dd is 5.4 and has a 6 tog duvet from Ikea. Her room is very cold during winter and often has a blanket on top (plus socks and vest and pjs)

ds is 2.6 and has a 4 tog duvet from Mothercare. Often has a blanket on top during winter - but he does have a sheepskin under his fitted sheet.

Might put the other sheepskin under dd's sheet if it's as cold as last year.

I would say at 5 plus a child can have a duvet of up to 10 tog, but younger ones (especially under 3) is should be less. Not based on fact or science though, just my opinion!

cece · 10/09/2006 21:56

That is what I thought but then when they sneak into our bed in the winter they are under a 15 tog!

my dd (almost 3) had a 10.5 tog duvet on her bed last winter (altho we do live in Scotland!!). She has a 4.5tog one just now but will get the heavier one again when it gets colder

magicfarawaytree · 11/09/2006 13:45

we just got any excellent all seasons duvet from debenhams, two half poppered together. one 4.5 tog the other 9 tog. I was told that 4.5 more than enough for milder weather and the children up to teens very rarely need more that than even in winter. obviously if you have artic conditions that would vary. tbh dd1 4.9 kicks off 4.5 tog and says that it is too warm.

the salesman in john Lewsi gave me a guide, verbally only, for Ds who was then 3 or 4. I can't now remember but if you're thinking of buying new duvets anyway perhaps go to a big department store and try and speak to a full time experienced member of staff.

I was trying to buy an extra thick duvet thinking as a young child DS would need more tog than us but in fact it was quite the opposite.
You probably already know this, but I didn't, but apparently because children breathe more rapidly than adults they have more body heat and therefore need a less heavy tog duvet.

cece · 11/09/2006 13:50

OK think I will get a 9 tog for DD as she does feel the cold. DS on the other hand always seems warm in bed so will leave his as it is.
