Alternatives to sleeping-bags for wriggly babies who get all twisted up?

dd has always slept in a gro-bag or similar, but recently she is wriggling in her sleep so much, that the end of the grobag is getting twisted round and round and this is waking her up

my mum says she had us in furry all-in-one sleep suits with arms and legs but with no covers on

just had a look in the usual shops and can see ordinary sleepsuit/baby-gro type things but not sure warm enough to put dd in without any covers

any ideas anyone?

sounds trivial - but need to try to put right every slight thing which could be affecting her sleep, as myself and dh both up at least 3 times each during the night settling her and both extremely tired and desperate

thanks in advance

Some fleece babygros here , also try Woolworth (looked online, but couldn't find anything) - they sometimes have fleecy babygros too.

bumbleweed · 10/09/2006 13:53

Thanks for the link JN - that was the kind of thing I was looking for

I will have a look in Woolies too, cheers

dont like the colours/patterns of those ones though - anyone else know of any web shops which sell this kind of thing?

DD has fleecy sleepsuits that I#ve bought from ebay.

These are the ones she has

here , here and here

and it has made some difference to her sleeping .

IdrisTheDragon · 10/09/2006 15:37

(DS was a grobag lover, so when DD came along and just got twisted in hers, I was surprised (and more sleep deprived ))

bumbleweed · 10/09/2006 15:54

not just our dd then, Iris, thats strangely reassuring

I will do a search on ebay

also just occurred to me that the fleecier ones will prob hit the shops later in autumn ready for winter

Various designs here (you can buy with or without the hood!).

tassis · 10/09/2006 16:22

was going to say fleecy all in ones. you can use them over babygros/pyjamas when it's the depth of winter. and they're VERY cute!

i've got them in BHS in the past

hope it helps you get your sleep!

bumbleweed · 10/09/2006 16:22

thanks again JN

sympathy sympathy. i know how you feel

ds1 (3 now) was a grobag baby, slept in his own bed (cot) in own room from about 5 months, through the night not long after. wonderful.

ds2 (now2) arrived only 13months after ds1 and had TOTALLY diff ideas. by the time he was 15 months, yes thats 1 yr and 3 months, dp and i were soooooooo tired (up between 3 and 6 times a night) we called in a night nanny/sleep trainer person which more or less did the trick.

now ds3 (7months now) (yes yes, we are mad ) is just about accepting ds1's grobag thingys but he does get v twisty, so THANK you for this thread.

(didnt say anything helpful there at all, did i? doh)

bumbleweed · 11/09/2006 10:17

Nappiesgalore - thanks for the sympathy

If I was just to use normal sleepsuits and pyjamas how many layers do you think I would need in this kind of weather

Sorry that sounds so pathetic a question, but I've been trained out of any instinct I may have had by the really useful chart on the gro-bag which tells you what to put them in for what temperature

She's currently in a short-sleeved vest and 1 tog grobag

hmmm, know what you mean.

weve had a couple of really warm evenings, but then it gets colder as the night goes on doesnt it, so it seems a bit of a tightrope act really...

depends how thick/warm the fleecy thing you end up with seems. experiment a bit with just a vesty thing, then a little more or less, depending.

a quick way to tell if theyre too hot is to put a finger on the back of their neck and see if its clammy. if it is, theyre too hot.

my ds3 is usually a bit too hot when i first put him down tho, coz hes been cuddled up in his bag for a 1/2 hour bf, so we're both a bit sticky IYSWIM. i generally try to imagine what i'd be comfortable in, then do that.

IdrisTheDragon · 11/09/2006 12:58

Dd has been wearing a normal sleepsuit or pyjamas with a fleecy one on top. (I too have been trained out of my own knowledge by grobags ).

She continues to sleep quite nicely (DS of course is taking over on the waking up at night front....)

NappiesGalore · 11/09/2006 12:59

BTW - dont feel pathetic. youre doing a fantastic job under immense pressure. a few nights better sleep and you'll feel MUCH better, believe me.

Surfermum · 11/09/2006 13:00

Another vote for furry sleepsuits. DD has never managed to keep covers on herself and invariably ends up at the opposite end of the bed to where I put her! They're great. When we go camping I've put her in 2.

Enid · 11/09/2006 13:00

is she in a properly fitting one?

dd3 wasnt and she was a nightmare (hers was too big)

I bought a 0-6 month one (even though she is 5 months so will grow out of it soon) and it has been fab - two unbroken nights so far!!

Enid · 11/09/2006 13:01

there was a thing that someone recommended to me that holds them in place in bed! would that work? (kind of a velcro thing that wraps round their tummies - looked cosy)

NappiesGalore · 11/09/2006 13:03

you know, i might be inspired to try this fleecy thing for myself.... he does get kinda twisty which may be one of the factors which wakes hime in the night...

NappiesGalore · 11/09/2006 13:03

Enid. eh? cant picture it. more detail please!

CMac · 11/09/2006 13:11

Mothercare etc had loads of fleecy sleepsuits last winter - just used it on top of normal pjs after dd had grown out of her grobag and it was fine. Think you are right - will just be a case of waiting for the winter stock to come into the shops.

IdrisTheDragon · 11/09/2006 13:17

Here are some on ebay at the moment

Here

here and

here

bumbleweed · 11/09/2006 19:06

Enid she's in a 6-18m one and she is 11 m almost, so yes prob the right size. I'm not so keen on fixing her to the bed as she is really quite mobile now and stands up in the night, and I can imagine all hell breaking loose if she felt in any way constrained - I think the bag itself is annoying her as she keeps pulling at it and scowling.

Nappies, I have put her in the grobag again tonight but I think you are right - whatever we would feel comfy in is prob the same for us. A read somewhere that as a general rule babies dont need any extra layers than we would wear.

So I'm thinking short-sleeved body-suit under a normal cotton long-sleeved babygro for a night like tonight.

Iris - thank you for those links - you have been very kind and helpful

And thanks to others who have responded too

NappiesGalore · 11/09/2006 21:16

hi bumble - yeah, my ds does the pulling and scowling thing at his bag too... i do wonder if it pisses him off so much it actually does more harm than good, in terms of getting him to sleep comfortably through the night.

btw - i would be tempted to put a little more than a short bodysuit and a normal cotton babygro on, even on a warm night; it does get cooler as the night goes on, and your heartrate goes down when you sleep so you dont keep as warm... think they might wake in the small hours feeling a bit chilly. (i personally hate that feeling, but can just wrap myself up in the duvet when it happens, which obv LO's cant if they dont have one!)

bumbleweed · 11/09/2006 21:39

Nappies, okay will rethink. Told you I was clueless! Well thats why I started this thread anyway

OP posts:
NappiesGalore · 11/09/2006 22:09

bumble - if you are clueless, so am i! im bouncing ideas about looking for the right answer as much as you are, believe me

Actually i just came on to say that ive just taken ds out of his bag and put him in a sort of furry sleepsuit (you know, with feet and long sleeves) over the long sleeved body-suit (no legs) thing he was wearing. and he seems much happier/more comfortable/the right temperature, as he went back to sleep with hardly any bother at all. (he had woken up screaming after only 1/2 hr in bed)

so THANK YOU for inspiring me to find a better solution!
