Travel cot or not...

Not sure of I'm posting this in the right section but this is my first post so forgive me!!

My first baby is due on 8 August, my sister in law is getting married on 27th September in Ireland. I'm not worried about the flight with a tiny baby but I'm really torn about whether we can go due to where the baby would sleep. Is it feasible/safe for us to buy a travel cot to take with us given that the baby would be 6 weeks old at the very most?

Yes, we went away with DS at six weeks and had him in the travel cot; he was perfectly happy. Only alternative would be to bring the Moses basket on the plane which I doubt would be an option!

Get a Phil and teds travel bassinet. They are great as convert into bag to carry the travel cot and all other baby stuff ie clothes/ nappies etc so pretty compact. They last approx 0-6months like a Moses basket

I took a moses basket for dd when we went away at eight weeks, however we drove so werent tied to what we could take on a flight etc.

If space / transporting is an issue, does family know anyone woth a travel cot already over there you could loan?

I had looked at the Phil & Ted bassinet. Could be an idea. Very re-assuring to know that people have done it and little one has been fine...

We've got the Nuna one and DS sleeps really well in it. It has a bassinet attachment - don't get the mini one, the full size is much better.

Just revisiting this...my baby girl has arrived and still hoping we will make it over to Ireland in a couple of weeks. By the time we are due to go LO will be 5 weeks old. A family member has a brand new unused travel cot we can use. My concern is that is one that is low down to the floor as opposed to her being raised up, if you know what I mean?! Is it ok to use a travel cot like this at her age?

Many thanks in advance.....

as far as I know there is no reason not to use it but be prepared for backache from lifting her in and out!!

Doobledootch · 11/09/2014 15:55

It'll be fine, there really is no need to worry about this.

I never liked travel cots - the baby/child is too far down to easily pick up, or more importatnly IMO, to put down with out waking once they've fallen asleep in your arms.

I'd look for another solution, such as taking a moses basket, having her sleep in the pram (if you have a flat one), or even makign up a little bed in a drawer or box or something like they used to in ye olden days.

It will be fine. We used a travel cot from an early age for naps and nights at families. And as for your back- she's only a fews old! Wait until you are hauling a preschooler into a car seat or carrying two!

Have a fab trip.
