What has happened to my baby?!

My ds is 4 months , he is in his own room since 3 months because he was such a good sleeper it was us that disturbed him. This worked and we were all happy.

Well how this has all changed ! He goes to sleep ok at 6.30 ish and we feed him around 11pm before we go to bed. From about midnight he starts whinging and crying out. He will no longer self settle like he used to....once I've been in to make sure he's ok if I leave him he'll start shouting and rolling around his cot like he's possessed!

When he is hungry he has his bottle but that does not help him relax, he still carries on.

When dp was away ds had a bad cold so I had him in with me so I could keep an eye on him. Just me and him in the king size bed no pillows or duvet (it was a warm week) I was happy with the safety aspect. I know he'll settle in bed with us but I'm not happy with the safety aspect any more, also he's very mobile and we are all squashed and can't sleep.

Last night I tried to settle him for hours. I'm exhausted now. I don't want to co sleep for safety and also because I need some time away ! He has become super clingy and whiny in the day too ( he naps ok thank god )

Is this because he was ill? Or something else? Can he go back to settling in his cot?

Help

Is he in pain at all do you think? colic? reflux? Do you think it's related to the 11pm feed? Even teething can start at this age? Midnight is usually the time when most pain is felt.

Thanks for your reply.

He has a tooth coming but it hasn't bothered him for days. He isn't doing full on crying like when he had colic . As soon as I go to him he starts smiling and is wideawake.....if I take him into bed he'll drop off right away so I don't think it's pain.

He has also become addicted to his dummy and now cries out every time it falls out ( which is roughly a thousand times a night! ) I am going to try and wean him off it.

I reckon it's the four month sleep regression - and it's brutal!
But, it will pass.

My ds was a nightmare for about four weeks at that age but soon settled back to his usual routine (which isn't great, but better).
