Help- 4 month old babbling and shouting through the night

My DS is 4 months old and for the last three weeks has been sleeping really poorly. He goes down to sleep between 6 and 7 in his cot and sleeps until between 11&1, when he wakes for a feed. He must be hungry, as he usually takes around 6oz. He then wakes between 3&4 and lies in his cot babbling and shouting. He isn't wet, doesn't have wind and refuses milk. I have tried letting him lie there and babble, but he works himself up into shouting and then eventually crying. He seems totally unable to go back to sleep. The only thing that seems to work is taking him into my bed. I have tried settling him for nearly an hour, before taking him in with me. Sometimes, he won't go back to sleep in my bed either. I don't think he can't settle himself, as he obviously does that earlier in the night. I'm shattered and desperate for a decent sleep. Does anyone have any tips on how to get DS back to sleep?

Can you shift his daytime naps so he goes to bed at 8pm hopefully that would novelist night wakings.

Have you checked that something isn't waking him at 4 am? Light, temperature etc

In the short term I'd go to bed earlier yourself maybe 9pm till 4am would at least be enough to keep you going.

I didn't think to check the temp or the light when he wakes at 4. I've just been checking if he wet/hungry/windy. I'll give that a go tonight. I've tried changing his nap/sleep schedule, but he has a screaming fit if he isn't down between 6&7 so I'm wary of trying that again.

Thanks for the tips. I kept the windows open last night and DS slept really well. I'm hoping it's not a fluke. Fingers crossed for a good night!
