7 month old (newly) waking in the night

7 month old DS (was 5 weeks premature if that makes a difference) has recently started waking in the night and I'm not sure what the best way to deal with it is.

He goes to bed at 6.45/7, takes a dream feed at 11 and used to sleep until 6-7am. I know we are incredibly lucky with this. We have recently come back from a holiday in the US (3 weeks ago) and since we have come back he has started waking an average of three or four times between 2am and 6 am. DH or I will go into him, give him his soother and he usually goes right back to sleep. Again, I know that as far as interrupted sleep goes, this barely registers but I would like to try to get him back to sleeping right through.

I don't know whether we are creating a rod for our back by getting up every time? Are we making the "problem" worse? Should we wait to see if he self settles? I'm worried that if we do that he will wake up fully and upset himself and then he'll be awake for hours. Or should we just be very grateful that he'll go straight back to sleep and just accept that we'll have to get up a couple of times a night.

I know this is very minor compared to the sleep issues a lot of others have, but if I can't ask here where can I ask?

How does he go to sleep when you put him to bed? Does he self settle then? If he does, then I would be tempted to leave him for 5 minutes when he wakes up, and see if he self-settles.

If he doesn't then you could try going in to reassure him of your presence but not putting his soother in (maybe just shushing or saying 'night night'). If that works you could do a gradual retreat over a couple of nights.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the advice Wasting. When I put him to bed in the evening, he normally turns over on his side and goes straight to sleep.
I'll try and leave him for a few minutes first before going into him tonight.
