Should we drop to one nap?

Hi ladies
14mo LO here, current pattern is
sleep 7.30pm-5.45/6,
Nap 9/9.30-11ish (normally 1.5hours)
Nap 2.30-4ish.

Should we push to one nap to try and get later waking? Or should I just get some blackout blinds? We have had odd days of later waking, normally when he's just had one short morning nap at nursery. We have already pushed bedtime back from 7-7.30.

Any advice welcomed!
Thanks .

I would make the first nap shorter and keep the post lunch time one.

Shatteredmamma1 · 21/05/2014 18:44

Thanks Grin I assume 45 mins then 1.5 hours?

Yes. Although tbh the wake up isn't that bad!

I also have double blackout blinds. Well a blind and a curtain. Very effective!

I know- I've had 5.15 for a while so I know it isn't horrendous. It's just he can go later and sometimes does. I will see how it goes. We also have blind and curtain but it isn't brilliant - will have to invest in a better one! Grin

You could try either switching to one nap or doing shorter morning nap for a week or so and see how it goes. I switched DD to one nap at 12.5mo for similar reasons, but it resulted in catastrophic over-tiredness after about 2 weeks - the single nap was getting shorter and shorter and her morning wake up getting earlier (ie signs of overtiredness) so we switched back to 2 naps (most days).

I then did a lot of reading about the 2-to-1 transition and it seems it can be messy and long (months of 2 being too many and 1 not enough). So, we're still (at 13.5mo) muddling through, just making sure we fever her opportunity for 2 long naps when she seems very tired.

Thanks city yes I agree it's hard. I'm giving him 2 today as he is always knackered from nursery. Some say stick with one once you've dropped it and some say it's fine to alternate. I might just go with the flow a little and maybe a for one nap consistently by 16m if that's suiting him. Sound about right?!

I'd say the morning nap is too long, and the midday nap too late.

DS (9mo) does 9.30 - 10 am nap, 12.30 - 2.30 nap, bed 7 - 7. I generally have to wake him from his morning nap and never let him sleep later than 2.30 in the afternoon.

Shatteredmamma1 · 22/05/2014 10:54

That's GF routine though isn't it stinkus ? I disagree with dropping the morning nap completely at 10m- no way would DS have managed that. I will yet shortening the am nap to 45 minutes though in prep for dropping it in the next 6-8 weeks. Thanks.

Mine didn't drop a morning nap until closer to 2 (both of them). Same for most of their peers!

CityDweller · 22/05/2014 15:49

Btw, my DD would be on same schedule as yours op, but with slightly later wake up (6.15-7.15) if she was at home and left to her own devices. The only reason I really started messing with hers is that it completely clashes with our new cms routine. This is one of the reasons they say NOT to switch to a single nap. If I was a SAHM I'd let her take two naps until she really showed signs of dropping one (ie fighting it or only napping for 15 mins). A 5.45/6 wake-up isn't all that early (even tho it's rough on us).

So, if I were you I'd say either leave it as is, or try shortening the morning nap and bringing the 2nd nap earlier.

Thanks both. Yes sake here with the nursery. He does seen to sleep later on one nap though but not sure if it will lead to over tiredness in a couple of weeks. Why is this so much harder than the 3->2 transition??!! Smile
