Night terrors in 23 month old

Hello.

Looking for help for my sister.

My niece suffers with terrible night terrors, her eyes are open, but she screams at the top of her voice, awful terrible screams
and runs around and my sister can't hold her or comfort her or anything, my niece just screams more.

Has anyone got any good tips please

She is very active during the day, has a sleep for about an hour, she is very happy and content and has no 'stress' in her life.

She loves going to bed, with her mum for her milk and cuddles

Thanks in advance for any tips that you can give

The only advice I can give you at this point is for your sister to note what time the night terrors start (usually is within a time frame of sleep cycle) and then gently wake her about 10 mins or so before she thinks they will start. She need to make sure that she keeps accurate records of times that it happens and try and gently wake a little before each one. It is about breaking the cycle IYSWIM?

If this fails she really should be getting advice and referral to a sleep clinic.

Night terrors are very scary for adults, the children usually don't remember them, but the brain can be 're-trained'.

Good luck.

Is she getting enough sleep? My dd is 28 months and has two hours a day as did her brother. What is her diet like?

It can be because of being overtired. If she's crashing out quickly at the start of the night then that's a sign she is too tired.

I had night terrors when I was about that age and they lasted a few years. Mum used to wake me up before she went to bed which usually helped. I don't think I ever remembered them or was scared but it was awful for my parents.
I went on to do a lot of sleep walking as a child and now get hypogogic hallucinations (strange waking dreams when I'm going to sleep) and I have very vivid dreams that I can control. I think that's all more common after you've had night terrors. I actually quite like my crazy dreams and certainly never had any lasting damage from the night terrors.
It sounds like your niece is a happy little girl and hopefully she'll grow out of it soon.

She doesn't go straight to sleep when she gets into bed, takes about half hour..

Sleep during the day is varied (mum tries)
Sometimes 20 minutes, sometimes 3 hours

Her diet isn't very good, she's a terrible eater and nibbles.at things...
She has extra vitamins and minerals
