Suggestions on how to black out room, not blinds

I'm in rented flat and don't want to put new blinds in if I can help it. I thought about that blackout blind sheets that I saw that stick on window but we have a bit of condensation so that won't work I don't think. Anything other ideas?

We've currently got some dark coloured duvet covers draped over the curtain rail.

Tinfoil. Dampen the window, stick it on. Works a treat and comes off easily too.

Blackout curtain linings?

SamL88 · 30/04/2014 23:53

I'm in rented accommodation too and we get bad condensation but I've found the gro company black out portable blind to be brilliant. I just have to make sure I take it down between uses and hang it over the bannister to dry when the condensation is particularly bad. It's fab for going away too.

I second the gro company portable blind, it can be adapted to fit most window sizes and you can take it with you when you go away.

ilovepowerhoop · 05/05/2014 08:23

we have curtain linings that you just attach to the curtain hooks behind the normal curtain

addictedtosugar · 05/05/2014 08:28

What type of curtains do you have?
If ones with heading tape at the top, get some black out liners and curtain hooks.

We have a gro company black out blind. It's works really well, was easy to sucker to the window, is adjustable (so fits a range of window sizes), and only cost a little over £20. Would recommend.

katandkits · 05/05/2014 14:07

Also have the gro anywhere travel blind, would definitely recommend it.

Black out liners = very good.

sharond101 · 05/05/2014 21:44

We bought black out curtains and now our early waking toddler (5.30am) sleeps until at least 7.30am (somedays it has been 10am!!!!)

RiverTam · 05/05/2014 21:46

we have blackout curtains (not a blinds fan), get them made slightly longer than floor length, or long enough to tuck behind the radiator if there's one under the window, so that you don't get any light showing at the bottom.

We've had them for 4 years - DD is not an early riser hooray!

rootypig · 22/05/2014 21:44

I'm in a rented flat and rigging something up myself. I've just bought blackout lining fabric from Dunelm Mill for £2.99 a metre, and some adhesive velcro for about £2 - put some screws in above the window (easily filled when we leave), cut some wee button type holes in the fabric ie the screws are taking the weight, velcro for a tight seal.

Please god let it work. sharon 10am is the dream. 7.30 is the dream!!!!

I have just done this gro blind thing.
I bought them and put them up with the annoying cups on night one.
Then I went out and bought super strong velcro from Robert Dyas and put it all round the two windows to match the gro blind velcro (that they put on so you can alter sizing).
It works brilliantly, though will need to repaint sash windows when they come down (if they ever do!!!)
Mind you, one week on it has only bought us an extra 40 minutes on average, but 5.40 beats 5am and maybe it will creep forward in time.
As an aside, i have also been round the house and used the super strong velcro to pin up all our brooms and household implements. It is amazing stuff and thoroughly addictive...

We have used this stuff, it blacks out well and you can cut it to fit. It sticks with static, so i doubt condensation would stop it from working. Only problem is where to keep it during the day - you can stick it to the wall, but it's not very pretty. Moh and the static attracts the dust...
