Co-sleeping: will we just make things worse in the long run?

My 6.5 month old lb has never slept through - up to 4 months he woke for food twice a night and since 4 months its more like 4 times a night. We have been putting him down in his cot between 6-7 and he will self settle to sleep and on occasion will put him back to sleep when he wakes in the night but usually he either needs a gentle head stroke or a feed (sometimes a full feed, other times comfort)
We start off the night settling him back in his cot (my DH does more than his share of settling) but at some point we are both exhausted and bring him into our bed where he suckles / feeds / cuddles in for the rest of the night and I can quickly calm him back to sleep / doze through feeds
I'm tempted just to give up the cot for the time being but we are both worried that will lead to more problems down the line and delay a possible improvement in his sleep development. Has anyone got any experience either way? If we stick it out is there a chance he will start going longer in his cot or should I just concentrate on actually getting some rest??

I am very pro-co-sleeping, so a bit biased, but do what is the least stressful for you all, especially your child. Cots are not natural places for babies to be, so they have to be 'trained' to be in them it seems. Have a look at 'Three in a Bed' by Deborah Jackson. My son went to a single bed at 13mths if his own accord and the transition was problem-free. Hope things get better soon. Oh, and don't worry about the 'sleeping through ' thing!
