10 month old inconsolable at 1am and 4am

Hi all,

Last night my DS went to bed at 7pm as usual and went to sleep easily. He sometimes sleeps through until 5am or gets up once a night and feeds and will sleep closer to 6am.

Last night he was crying in his usual way at 1am so I went in and fed him. He wouldn't let me put him back in his cot - he screamed for at least an hour and was inconsolable, pushing against me and really really upset. I ended up putting him into a kind of bear hug and jiggling him and he went to sleep at 2:30am - then up again at 4am and the same thing happened. I put the light on at one point and he went quiet immediately and just looked dazed. As soon as I turned the light out he started screaming again. I ended up putting him in our bed and he eventually fed to sleep.

He was off his food a bit last week, had a vomiting attack and has had constipation. The doctor can't find anything wrong with him except a slightly inflamed ear.

Could this be night terrors? He doesn't wake up screaming - only once I have fed him.

Thanks all for any suggestions!

Aw poor mite
Could it be his teeth ?

widdle · 07/04/2014 16:50

Hi Lilaclily - maybe - I did think that but he hasn't been this way with any of his others and he has 7.

He was happy as larry yesterday - when he is teething he's usually a bit grumpy during the daytime too

Hi Widdle,

I was just going to ask before I read your post about his ears as my DS1 did exactly the same for a few weeks, doc said he had a "slightly" sore throat turned out he had full on tonsillitis and an ear infection, my poor baby. These and the ones you mentioned are usually all related to teething believe it or and your DS is at the age he will probably start getting his back moallers (sorry about spelling) which is when these extra complications begin.

If he wakes up the first time maybe give him some calpol?! you'll know if its his ears or/and teeth then as he most probably wont wake again at 4 due to the pain being dealt with.

This is all just mummy experience and obviously not professional but hope it helps and if its continues get the doctor to re look, sounds to me like little man is obviously in some sort of discomfort and the warmth from you eases the pain. Good luck!!! x

Thanks for your reply Beautifulboy1.

I took him to the docs yesterday and he couldn't see anything wrong with his ears. He actually thought it may be night terrors but I'm not so sure any more - it seems to me as though he is awake and just in tremendous pain.

Wow can he get his molars this early? That's a good point - he is chewing his fingers a lot but he is perfectly happy during the daytime.

Last night he woke at midnight (sigh) but I fed him and he went back to sleep. Then was awake again at 5am and I took him into bed. He fed for a while then broke off and started screaming again. Now I'm wondering if his stomach is bothering him. It would be so much easier if these little people could talk!!

I'll try Calpol tonight if he wakes early again - thanks!!

Bless you, this is the trouble with motherhood it is always a guessing game isn't it.

Yes he can get molars at anytime, my son got him first one at 7 months, my sister in law was even born with a tooth!! Scary! lol

When my son is teething he is fine all day as well, I think like us when they lay down all the blood rushes to their heads which makes their little gums throb and disturbs their sleep.

Night terrors is a thought as my niece suffered with those until she was 4, but hey if taking him in bed with you is easing whatever is upsetting him and gives you a few hours sleep then go for it! I don't think there is a wrong or right answer, you just have to do what your instinct as his mother says.

Yep definitely try Calpol, let us know how you get on, good luck xx

i think it will be teeth moving. our DD has done this couple of times but we now find if we give her a sachet of teething powders along with 1 spoon of calpol it stops nearly straight away and she goes back to sleep.

Ok - think we have gotten to the bottome of it (I'm overseas by the way which is way there is a bit of a time difference). I think it is definitely stomach issues. He is still constipated and seems quite gassy.

His stomach was rock hard last night before I tried to put him to bed and he cried for an hour (very unusual). He also did a couple of painful poos this morning -poor wee thing. So now off to google constipation remedies. He has been on prunes and had loads of water but not helping so far!!

Thanks for your help all!

If you're looking for constipation relief try stewing some chopped up dried apricots in a little water (use the natural ones, not the orange ones because they have added sulphur). They can then be mashed/whizzed & added to porridge/yoghurt etc.

If it's any consolation my dd does the same (11months) but I think in her case it's partly teeth, partly habit. I think I blames teeth with my ds for years though haha!
