reflux baby-does the amby hammock bed help?

jeanini · 20/08/2006 20:33

hi my 12 wk old dd2 has been diagnosed as having reflux and from day 1 hasnt liked sleeping in her moses basket or cot.

the only thing she seems happy to sleep in is in her pushchair. i know this isnt ideal. but me and dh are at our wits end and dont know what else to do.

after reading some mn threads i have ordered an amby hammock. i just wondered if there are any mums that have used one and if so has it helped settle the baby and does the baby sleep better and for longer in one.

also if there are any mums with reflux babies that the hammock bed has helped.

My youngest who's now 3 had reflux and grew out of it by about a year old!!!!
We were told that after each feed to keep her as upright as possible for up to an hour after each feed.
Haven't heard of the hammock you're talking about but you could try raising the head of the moses basket.
We used to put a small blanket under the mattress for bed time.
You may find the reflux is making her uncomfortable.

we also were told to buy SMA STAYDOWN milk especially for babies with reflux.
It comes in a tin with a purple lid.

Hope this helps even though it doesn't answer your original question.

ds2 had this for first 2 months but we took him to a homeopath and onec he had taken rememdy he was fine.i could not believe it as he had been in such pain since he was born. the remedy was called lycopodium but i would advise you see a homeopath as each child is different.
good luck, it is a nightmare having a reflux baby. well i found it awful. you feel sorry for them but also feel knackered yourself.
did not get one of those hammocks, just stuck pillow under mattress of moses basket.

hi jeanini,i am sure you already know reflux is horrid and painful and burns their throat/chest just like we get with heartburn.

All mine have had it and here my tips..
Get Gaviscon from the GP although am really hoping gp already gave you it.
Double check you get a burp after feeding dd, helps a bit and she will probably not be as sick.
Raise the mattress in the moses basket with towels underneath as fussymummy suggests so that contents of tummy arent rising up oesophagus.
(thats why she likes to sleep in the buggy)
Never lie her flat, use car seat etc.
The hammock looks like great idea we certainly considered it this time round with ours but just were concerned that they could wriggle into dodgy position and that by 6months would they outgrow it?

kittywits · 27/08/2006 22:14

Jeanini, well done on getting a hammock. I can't recommend them highly enough. I don't know about reflux, but if I were to list all the reasons why they are the most valuable piece of baby equipment you will ever buy then i would be here all night. Surfice to say your baby will sleep, will be content and so wiil you, good luck

Jimjams2 · 27/08/2006 22:16

Really worked with ds3- was a dream- he started sleeping through really early on. Wish I'd had it for ds2 as well, as with hindight I think he was refluxy and would never sleep on his back/in his moses basket raised on not......In fact wish I'd invented the thing or had the UK distribution rights I'm so pasisonate about it!

Has it arrived? Is it working? Marvellous thing.

kittywits · 27/08/2006 22:26

My 8 month old dd3 is a bit on the large side. I recently spent ages reconstructing my trusty old cot. She was having none of it. Straight back in the hammock. She has never once cried in it. The only way I know she is awake is by checking. She will lie in it happily boucing up and down. I am absolutely DREADING the day when she has to be moved.

Jimjams2 · 28/08/2006 11:38

kittywits- ds3 was like that at 8 months- by 10 months he'd started trying to turn in the hammock and was getting cross, eventually the trying to turn was waking him up- so then I put him in his cot- initially for daytime sleeps, then for the night as well. He was unhappy for about one night but then settled really well and switched easily. I was worried he'd be glued to the amby as well. (I'd be in the amby if I could fit )

kittywits · 28/08/2006 13:09

That's a relief Jimjams. I've noticed that dd has started to turn in it and ends up in v. strange positions but this doesn't yet wake her up. Not long though I suspect. And yes I'd love to sleep in one!!!!!

aitch71 · 28/08/2006 13:22

CANNOT recommend the amby highly enough, although we were fortunate that dd didn't have reflux, so i can't comment on that.
she has, however, always slept well and got quite used to bouncing herself back to sleep. she is 8 and a half months and still loves it for daytime sleeps but just recently has become so blooming mobile that she twirls like whirling dervish at night time and gets cross when she's stuck on her tummy. so we're going to pick up a cot... boo hoo.

PS i don't reckon the amby will be a waste of money anyway, as even if it only works for a few months you can sell them on ebay for about £130, so you're paying £60 for a few month's of good sleep? not a bad deal...

jeanini · 28/08/2006 18:33

hi thanks 4 everyones comments. she seems to like the amby, she takes a little while to settle then sleeps from about 8.30pm to about 2.30-3am. i like the fact i can rock it.

ive ordered another mattress just in case it gets wet. has everyone else bought the fitted sheets that go with them. i have ordered them as well as a moses sheet is a nightmare to try and wrap round the mattress and leaving the velcro area free.

OP posts:
aitch71 · 28/08/2006 19:18

i have the fitted sheets, definitely worth buying. i also got the jump thing but i wouldn't recommend it as my chiropractor insists that jump things are back for babies' spines... there's always something.

also, it took me a while to work this out but as well as rocking it you can very gently bounce the spring up and down. my dd seems to like this even better than the swinging and it's even easier to do from your bed half asleep as one bounce keeps going for ages.

kittywits · 28/08/2006 19:25

They bounce themselves up and down after a while!

aitch71 · 28/08/2006 19:37

kittywits, my dd is so lazy that she pulls the fabric once to bounce herself, rahter than go to the bother of arching her back...

Jimjams2 · 28/08/2006 23:06

We had the fitted sheets as well- great.

Ds3 was another bouncer. In fact that was his main problem moviing across to a cot, he used to try and bounce himself in the cot- big arched back and flop down, and it would wake him up Aww I miss him not dooing that.....

aitch71 · 28/08/2006 23:12

we're moving across to a cot this week, jimjams, i am dreading it. PS i rather love you too.

Jimjams2 · 28/08/2006 23:16

Good luck- I was dreading it too, but it was only bad for one night or so- far easier than I thought it would be.

Felt very sad when I finally packed the amby away though

aitch71 · 29/08/2006 00:01

ah no, ordinalrily i'd be gutted but in fact i will be delighted to lend it on to a friend who already has 2 under 6 and has just found out she is pregnant with twins... my other friend is passing on her old amby as well so they'll be a double hammocked household (although i think for the first while they might both go in one). hopefully she'll get some sleep...

kittywits · 29/08/2006 09:28

When DD is in hers it's about 2cm from the floor, so I guess the time to move is very soon .
When we went on hols this year i was really amazed at how easy it was to pack away and put up again. SO much easier than a travel cot AND had the added advantage of DD sleeping in a familiar bed and not giving us and grief during the night

Poppy1976 · 11/09/2006 20:36

My son is 16 weeks and although doesn't have reflux has been waking up to 6 times a night since 12 weeks having slept 8 hours until then! I've covered hunger etc and am convinced that its because he has become a restless sleeper. He's starting to get more active in the day, rolling etc and seems to be waking every time he tries (and fails!) to do so in his sleep. Does anyone with experience of the Amby think that would help? He seems to sleep much better in pram and car seat....

jeanini · 17/09/2006 14:13

poppy1976- i think the amby hammock would help your son. my dd2 is 16 wks and she didnt like sleeping anywhere apart from her pushchair.

i took a gamble and bought one on the internet and its brilliant she sleeps from approx 7.30pm-8pm each night. if she stirs its normally because her dummy has come out so i just pop it in and just gently rock her back to sleep.

i would get one if i were you. i think you can get them on ebay but they hold their price quite well so you might want to get one new.
my dd2 likes to sleep with her head a bit elevated so the amby is ideal as you can adjust it.

hth xx

Hi everyone.
Any chance of a link to this hammock?
Ds is 3 weeks and was diagnosed with reflux nearly 2 weeks ago. He's taking prescription milk atm as he can't keep anything else down, he still vomits on this.
He likes being tilted or sat up in his rocker but its a real pain getting him to sleep in the day.

jeanini · 17/09/2006 15:19

if you put in amby hammock on google the site will come up.

Poppy1976 · 18/09/2006 11:54

Thanks Jeanini- I may well try. Its got better recently, down to twice a night. Noticed he was much, much better in his pop-up samsonite cot when we've been away twice in the last few weeks but was back to old tricks at home in his cot. Think it may be due to hitting the hard sides? I think I'll try him in the pop-up cot to see if that makes a difference- we have a proper mattress that fits it so he should be comfy. If it does then I'll get probably the hammock!

Jimjams2 · 18/09/2006 11:57

amby hammocks are the world's best invention Helps with refulx because of the position the baby sleeps in in it. If you type amby refulx into google you'll get lots of hits.

DS2 and ds3 were both refluxy. Struggled with sleep with ds2 for a long time- in the end he could only sleep on his side with the cot/moses basket propped up, he never managed his back, struggled with ds3 until we got the amby when he was 6 weeks old, then he slept really well (was still refluxy, but he slept!)
