Any "Baby Whisper ees" out there

Have just finished reading "The baby whisperer" and was quite impressed. Like all the baby sleep books out there, I take from them what suits me and bin the rest. I liked the fact that she teaches you to listen to your baby and read his cues. I'm a bit confused when it comes to the naps though. My 10 week old is sleeping from 7pm through to 7-8am with a dream feed at 10.30pm which believe me I'm not complaining about (my boobs are though!!!) He tells me he's ready to go back for a nap roughly 2 hours after waking and goes down smiling. He only sleeps for 30-45 minutes though and seems totally awake. Have tried sh sh shing him and stroking his head which he thinks is magic but doesn't stop him skwalking the minute I'm out of the room. I try this a few times but eventually pick him up and get on with the day. He's not cranky at all until he tells me he wants to nap again and the whole thing starts again ie short nap, sh shing, skwalking, picking up etc. That's all a long winded way of saying - could he just not need 1.5-2.5 hour naps during the day as he's getting a good stretch at night. Don't know wether to carry on trying to lengthen his naps or leave him to do his 3-4 30-40minute micronaps. Phew! Any advice?

Why don't you let him have his 30 - 40 minutes mid-morning (ie don't try to get him to go back to sleep) and then perhaps he will sleep a bit longer the following (mid-day) nap? Good luck.

kiwicath, my dd was v. similar to your ds. She had a v. good night's sleep but seemed to prefer 3 30-45 minute naps in the day rather than a long one. So long as it suits him and he continues to sleep and be active and happy I wouldn't bother to change it if I were you. Dd is now 17 months and still has 2 1.5 hour naps rather than a long afternoon one. So long as they get enough total sleep it doesn't really matter. Also, the naps do tend to extend as they get older and are more capable of riding through the naturally lighter points of sleep which seems to be 30-45 minutes after nodding off.
