What would you do?

My 11 month old ds is a great sleeper. He averages 11 hours at night and 1.5 during the day.
For the past week, when he is put into his cot, in his gro bag, he sits up and invariably falls asleep slouched forward.
My dh panics and says that we should lay him back down...which i've done and it wakes him up.
I'm inclined to leave ds and feel that if he was uncomfortable, he would move and lay down properly.

What do you think?

I would be inclined to layhim down. Would you leave him sat like that all night of he was happy? Wouldn't he be a bit stiff in the morning?

Others may have different views though.

Northerner · 03/03/2004 14:04

Hi Womba! I've never heard of that before, bless your little ds!I'd be inclined to lay him back down also, but perhaps you can leave him a little longer untill he is in a deep sleep and won' wake up?

womba1 · 03/03/2004 14:09

Mum2ela - yeah, i suppose you are right about him being stiff in the morning...i hadn't thought of that

Northerner - he does look really cute!! My ds is one of those who hates being fiddled with when asleep! I'll try it tonight and see what happens.

Thank you

Oh wow, how cute! Have you tried leaving him, how long does he stay seated?

Oops, I meant, by implication, will he eventually lay himself down?

womba1 · 03/03/2004 15:39

Thanks Secur and Prettycandles
I haven't tried anything with pillows to be honest and we haven't left him in this position at night so have no idea how long he would stay sitting.

During the day when he's playing on the floor, my ds may doze off to sleep for 5 or 10 mins and more often than not, he is slouched forward. I just thinks it's cos he's too lazy to manouvre himself into a laying position!

I suppose our main worry is that this postion may hinder his breathing.

Awww ... sounds so cute. Does he like sleeping upright in the day in a car seat or chair or pram or something? He may have just taken a shine to being in that position. My dd sleeps face down with her knees bent and her bottom in the air. I used to find it a bit odd but she's quite happy. Sitting up though he would get a stiff neck and surely at some point he'd topple over and wake himself up with a shock. I'd try what someone else has suggested here. lay him on his side but keep his position as you do so.

womba1 · 03/03/2004 17:08

Evita...I actually sometimes sleep in the same position as your dd!!

My ds only ever doses off on the floor or in his cot. It was really frightening the first time he fell asleep like this on the floor though.

I'd gone out to the kitchen and he was happily playing with his toys and making loads of noise. He then went quiet and as I walked in, saw him slumped right forward and holding his feet.
Needless to say i checked to make sure he was breathing and he dozed like that for about 10 mins.

Womba1, my oldest used to fall asleep anywhere, sitting up, even standing up and half way up the stairs. I'd try Northener's suggestion of waiting until he's more deeply asleep then rolling him sideways.

And don't forget to take a photograph, to show him, when he's grown up, how he used to sleep!

womba1 · 03/03/2004 21:55

Suedonim...my dh actually took a photo tonight of my ds in his cot, with his head bent over by his feet, fast asleep!

I managed to roll my ds onto his side and he was fine until i left his room. I've been up to him 3 times since 7.30pm because he continually sits up, slouches forward and falls asleep!

I'm thinking of attaching velcro strips to the back of his head.......

bit contraversial and likely to be shot down in flames - have you tried putting him down on his front? My DD has always found the "back to back" business impossible - even from a really young age and would wake continually, cry etc. and then, when big enough to sit up, started doing what yours is doing now. We gave in and put her face down, she snuggled down quite happily and stayed that way (most of the time). Even now at the grand old age of "nearly 3" she still chooses to snuggle down on her front, never falls asleep on her back. Just a thought.

womba1 · 03/03/2004 22:16

Stripeymouse, my ds used to go down well on his front but would wake up after several hours and then not settle on his back or front.
When my ds is on the floor, he is great at rolling over and from side to side but in his cot, he tends to get stuck and then panics.
It would worry me that he couldn't turn onto his back from his front if he wanted too, in the night.

My dh has just looked in on our ds and he is flat on his back and snoring for england...hurrah!!
