Sleep regression or just hunger?

My DS is 17 weeks old and EBF. At two months, he was waking about 3 times over 12 hours at night (which I was delighted with, having taken the naïve view that things would only get better).

For over a month now, he has been waking frequently in the wee small hours. He has a very large feed at 7pm, and will then usually sleep until midnight without incident. Thereafter, he will wake every 90 mins on average. As soon as I lift him, he leaps on the breast, sometimes practically chewing through the bra, and feeds for 10 minutes before settling back to sleep.

I'm not sure what to do. Part of me thinks that he is just hungry and I should let it be for another few months to see if the passage of time, solid foods and a bigger belly make a difference.

But as ever, there is another voice that tells me that I am creating a Rod For My Own Back by using feeding to settle him, and I ought to try some gentle sleep training.

Any pearls of wisdom? My own common sense seems to have escaped me.

No words of wisdom but my ds is just 18 wks, bf, doing the same. Back to 2 hrly feeds after a period of 2 night wakings. I'm just going with it for a few weeks to see what happens. I was advised a while ago to feed as much as poss in the day which I've done, but inadvertently created a 2hrly schedule in the process.

I haven't helped, have I?!

Growth spurt.
They happen at certain stages of development and then go away again.

Thank you both. Had always thought of growth spurts in terms of days, rather than weeks, but I guess anything is possible in this brave new word. Cakebaby - enjoy the infant acrobatics!
