What are the medications that make toddlers drowsy please?

We have a long haul trip coming up with DD who will then be 16 months. She is a very spirited/active/loud/physical child who tends to fight sleep and get overtired easily.

Obviously I will be trying all the usual tricks (new toys, cartoons, snacks, night flight etc) to keep her happy and entertained and to try to get her to sleep as much as possible.

However I am considering taking some antihistamine or similar with me as a last resort in case she has a complete meltdown.

Please can anyone list the medications which have a drowsy effect and can be taken by a 16 month old? I know about Piriton (and its possible hyperactivity effect for some DC) but not sure what else there is out there.

I'd rather not get a lot of judgey "it's barbaric to drug your child" answers please, I just want the information. I know some people will have this view but nonetheless I think that in certain extreme circumstances a dose of medication could be the lesser of two evils, for her sake as well as everyone else's.

I'd be very grateful to know what is available. Thanks Smile

medised is for over 6, not over 10 and there was a problem with supply due to a licensing issue. I have not seen it for ages

But surely you don't need to 'prove' it's for a 10yo? Or a 6yo or whatever?

Basically can I still buy medised.

I cried when I heard that the medisised thingy had existed once. waaaaa why didn't I have children sooner!!!!!

piriton did NOTHING for ds recently when he had hives.

only thing that works for him is boob and I have to say I positively encourage that, and hope it still works when we have to go to ny in October when he's 23 mo.....

I hate screens for kids but would some carefully chosen apps on an ipod or similar help???

I thought medised was dangerous hence the withdrawal?

Piriton was scary - it basically knocked ds out (he's a robust 4 year old). We used it when he had chicken pox. I stopped using it after a couple of times - this was in the summer.

If she has a meltdown I would get hours of her favourite shows to watch! Does she like a back carry sling? Stick her in one of those and walk up and down the aisle. She might scream when you first put her in but calm down and sleep. Works for my dd!

I havent seen medised for ages and as I said in a previous post it wasnt available due to a licencing issue. It doesnt show online to buy either but i was redirected to a product called Dozol which seems to be similar

Piriton knocks me out. The first time I took it (for an allergy)I sat down and then woke up 3 hours later. I didn't dare take it after that. Luckily ds just sat and played nicely but the thought of the things a 2 year old could have done when he was basically alone for 3 hours is terrifying!
When dd took piriton she was fast asleep for about 3 hours and then stayed awake for 28 hours straight, a reaction like thay wouldn't be great on a flight
