My 7 month DS won't nap when we are out!

We've always struggled with this. My DS is 7 months and will not fall asleep when we are at someone else's house. The last few days have been a bit of a nightmare, as we've spent a lot of time with family and friends, DS will not sleep so will just moan and moan until we eventually have to leave.

He'll fight a bit when we are at home but has a bouncy chair that he'll eventually go to sleep in. Where possible we will bring the chair with us and he'll relax a bit in it but he just know he's not at home so won't sleep.

What do you all do? Please tell me there's a magic trick I haven't tried?

DD has been the same since she was about 4 months old. It's very restricting as we've always had to be home for her naps or, at the very least, driving somewhere during them. It's gotten easier now as she only has one nap so the day is cut into two, not three or four!

Sorry that's not really very helpful but I think that some babies will sleep anywhere and some won't.

Sister, my DD (5mo) is like this. I bought a ring sling and rock her in that. It's like a work out for me too Wink
It's a nightmare but maybe a sling/wrap might work?

Dd would never nap at anyone's house or out and about. Only ever went down for naps in cot or would fall asleep in car.

Pushchair, snooze shade and violent rocking backwards and forwards worked for us at this age!

Thanks for your replies

I'll try the ring sling, bi heard of it so will have a google. I'm worried he just may be 'one of those babies' but I'm willing try anything before resigning to that.

I second the idea of a snooze shade over the buggy (can buy on amazon I think?).

DS is very much the kind of baby who has only ever really napped in his cot in the pitch dark. No way he would ever just drift off to sleep on my lap at someone's house like some other babies I have seen - nearly fell off my chair when I saw that happen! I always end up leaving things cos when DS gets tired he fights and fights it and just grizzles and moans.

In desperate circumstances when I couldn't plan to be at home though, like over Xmas day, I have found that popping him in the pushchair in a quiet corner of in laws house, for example, with the snooze shade over him and rocking back and forth slowly usually sends him off. He will only have 30 mins or so in t eh buggy like this but it's better than nothing.

I think some babies just can't switch off when there's exciting things to look at no matter how tired and grumpy they are...my DS is deffo like this!

I have to say I have spent most of the first year planning my days so that I can be home for his naps - which is much easier now he only has 2 naps per day but was a restrictive nightmare when he was in the 4 x catnaps phase! Wish I had known about the Snooze Shade back then!

No help im afraid but ds is exactly like this. We went out once and he stayed awake 12 hours at about 4 months !

We just admitted defeat and now get up and out as early as possible and then let him have a nap when we get home then wake him up a bit before bed to have dinner and bath etc.

He will only ever sleep in his cot in the dark!
