WHY WON'T HE SLEEP? And why does he find it so funny?!

Why won't my 12 week old nap? I seem to spend all day everyday trying to get him to sleep. He's tired - he can't not be as he doesn't sleep but why does he fight it?

I feel like I've tried everything but I don't want to spend every day trying to make him sleep, I want to fix the problem of why he won't sleep when he's tired!

Please somebody help me!!!

my babies have always been reluctant sleepers. walking in the buggy normally helped them sleep. Unfortunately thsy always woke up as spon as ut stopped. on the plus 2 long walks a day helps get rid of the baby weight

I'm already doing that but whilst I enjoy walking endlessly in the cold! I can't just rely on that every time I need him to sleep! There must be something else that can be done to stop him getting overtired?

Sorry if that was a bit shouty, I'm exhausted!!

sorry no other advice as this was the only thing that worked for us. eventually ds started to nap with just a short walk and would stay asleep so I could come back and do stuff. he is 2 now and a champion sleeper so it does get better. good luck. maybe worth investing in a swing? we never did but perhaps should have on reflection.

WhateverLove · 17/12/2013 17:20

I've got a swing, he loves it but never sends him to sleep! I've got a sling - he used to fall asleep after 2 minutes, then longer, now I have to Hoover with him in it to get him off! Today I walked for 45 minutes with him awake, he closed his eyes just as I got home so roamed the streets for another 45 minutes!

Apparently at 3 months he should be sleeping for 5 hours in the day? Today he has collectively had an hour and a half! I must be doing something wrong and missing his sleepy cues so he's getting over tired and never recovering! I'm going to google google google until I find a solution, I'll try anything!

Thank you for your help and words of wisdom - I guess I've always got the future to look forward to! :)

How much is he sleeping at night? How do get him to sleep in the evening?

Will he feed to sleep if to let him?

purplemurple1 · 17/12/2013 17:28

Oh it's like the Spanish inquisition

I spent a few days always in the bedroom with mine si he had to get use to sleeping there. After that I've always put him on his cot for naps.

WhateverLove · 17/12/2013 17:31

Hi purple!

I calculated he gets around 10 ish hours at night in 2-3 hour spells. He cluster feeds from about 7/8 til 10/11 then I put him in his cot asleep.

He won't even feed to sleep in the day now! I try but he gets really annoyed and spits my boob out, spits at me, shouts angrily until I look at him then he laughs! I'm sure he does it on purpose the little sod!

Do you think if I get the first nap of the day at the right time then it will all become easier? I'm sure it's harder for him to sleep because he's overtired?

This was quite normal for mine. The world is far too interesting. I had to use a sling and block their view (literally with my hand). If at home, it was a dark room with white noise (by dark I mean use blackout blinds).

PuddingAndHotMilk · 17/12/2013 17:31

My DD is/was like this. I rock or feed her off to sleep after she's been awake for 1:20/1:30. It's so much better now she is less overtired. She still fights it, and I don't always succeed but it's a lot better.
Sleep breeds sleep - she's gone from 13 hours a day total to 15/16 hours.

WhateverLove · 17/12/2013 17:46

I do that too greathunt! Have to cover his face with the sling so he stops being nosey!

Thank you Pudding! That's what I wondered and you've just confirmed it! Will do anything I can to get him to sleep 1 1/2 hours after morning wake and go from there!

Thank you all - good to know I'm not alone with the sleep fighter!

I found getting mine down approx an hour half after waking he will have a long nap so I don't have to worry too much where how he naps the rest of the day.

Could you try sitting in a quite room, low lights after (or Mayne even during) his daytime feeds? Maybe some white noise would help as he likes the hovering.

WhateverLove · 17/12/2013 19:12

I've taken to watching the TV on mute with subtitles so as not to distract him whilst he's feeding - will try the white noise. Tomorrow, he's napping whatever happens!
