missing sleepy cues?

my 4 month old doesn't seem to have sleepy cues for her naps. She just starts crying, I try to read but she cries so I put her in her pram and she bawls for ten minutes before falling asleep, not very pleasant for either of us! Is this ok though? Is she just upset because she is tired? Help?!

I would think that is fine, but I am not an expert. How long does she sleep for when she sleeps?

claremoss · 28/11/2013 19:44

1.75 hrs in morning
1.25 hrs ish early avo
30mins around 4ish

She may well be upset because she is tired.

Personally I cant see much of a problem with what she is doing, or you either.

From what I can remember, each stage that babies and young children do doesnt last forever, even though it can feel like that at the time.

Ok, thanks :o)

I think crying herself to sleep for 10 mins sounds fine, I wouldn't worry. That'll just be a tired cry. It's what my DD2 did, and I was delighted with it as a system, because DD1 never showed any sleepy cues either and used to go into full-blown hysterics, not tired going-to-sleep crying, and the only thing that worked was feeding her.

It sometimes is a bit of a hysterical cry and I am thinking, is it because she is not tired enough when I put her down? But then we are at the 2 hour mark and she is asleep within 10 mins so....
Thanks guys.

Try putting her to sleep 2 hours after she last woke . It's usually recommended 1 -1/2 hours after for a
Newborn ish but she's slightly older. And that's roughly how long max they last without erring overtired.so:

Wake 7am, nap 9am
Wake 10am, nap 12pm
Wake 1.30pm, nap 3.30pm
Wake 4pm, nap 6pm
Wake 6.30pm, bed 8/8.30pm

After a few weeks you can see the pattern and probably find you can drop to roughly 3 naps again by gradually extending nap times and gaps in between. I would say the first nap def 2 hrs after wake though for a long time. I suppose the aim eventually is 1hr am, 2hrs after lunch, 30-45 mins late after noon

She would hate an hour nap in the morning, she likes her long one to be then. At the moment, we
7am up
730 feed
9-1045 nap
11 feed
1245-2 nap
215 feed
4-430 cat nap
5 feed
615 bath
630 top up feed
bed by 7 and asleep by 715.

If she's crying for 10 mins, that's not hysterical IMO... My hysterically crying baby would have kept it up for an hour at least. 10 mins is winding down to sleep I reckon.

Ok, thanks. Do you know, since I started this thread, I have been putting her down as SOON as she starts grizzling after a very quick look at a story book in the lounge, and she has only cried for a couple of minutes before sleep! So there you have it!! Thanks lots for advice :o)
