Why doesn't she sleep even when tired

My 3 month old has been experiencing sleep problems for almost two weeks now. She looks extremely tired but doesn't go to sleep. Because of being tired she doesn't play much and wants to be held all day. She does however go to sleep in the evening and sleeps for 7 to 9 hours at a stretch. I am wondering whether I should see a gp for her? Has anyone experienced this with their babies?? Advice needed please...

7 hours for a 3 month old is pretty good, is she getting any sleep at all during the day?

Does she feed well, or does she fall to sleep while you are feeding her?

Does she have wind/cry a lot?

When you want her to sleep during the day, what do you do? do you go to her room and turn out the lights, or are you trying to get her to go to sleep downstairs? Will she sleep if she goes in a pram or a car?

I wouldn't feel guilty about putting her in a pram, and going for a walk if that's the only way you can get her to sleep. The exercise will help you, and if you can get her back asleep you can have some time for yourself.

If she isn't crying, and she is eating, then I don't really know what a doctor would do, but I would say first and foremost trust your own instincts. I only wish I had done that with my PFB.

It might also be worth speaking to your health visitor.

Sleeping 7-9 hours in one go that young is pretty amazing!wanting to be cuddled more as they develop and grow more aware of the world isn't uncommon either. Does she nap in the day at all? Have you tried walks with a sling or buggy at a similar time each morning to encourage sleep routine along a bit?

7 to 9 hours is amazing. Mine only slept for an hour at a time. For a whole year. I'm not bitter, no not I Grin. Seriously, what are you worried about? You're coming up for a few big growth spurts, but things will settle down again.

Similar here. Wanted a quick feed every hour to two hours for most of the first year!

hello.. sorry for not being able to reply, baby had her vaccines and thus a fever.. Thisismummypig, she does fall asleep when I am feeding her and sleeps as long as held.
She doesn't cry alot rather she likes to play and talk to me.
I take her to her room when i am trying to put her to sleep but its no use.
She does fall asleep in the pram ocassionally but not always..

when mine looked extremely tired they were too tired to sleep (which sounds really odd). The key was picking up the tired signs before they got too tired.

What worked for mine was a 2 hour rule - no more than two hours awake at that age. sometimes they didn't even manage 2 hours before getting tired.

And when they are overtired - quiet, dark room, with some white noise (eg out of tune radio) usually did the trick of getting them to sleep.

I'm in exactly the same boat with my 10 week old ds. He sleeps well at night, although not as well as yours, OP, so I'm happy about that. My problem is the lack of naps during the day. He has done naps of up to 3 hours before, but in the last 2-3 weeks the most I can get from him is 30th most, usually in his carrycot if I take him for a walk or in his sling. He is starting to look more and more tired and getting more and more grumpy and grizzly. I'm trying to read the signs more and have just managed to get him down in his carrycot in our hallway which is quite dark which is quite a feat. Normally his naps only come after a feed or when or walking. I'll be following to see what wise words might follow!!!

another thing worth trying is teething gel - teeth can be moving around a long time before they come through and can unsettle them.

My DS1 at that age once went 10 hours during the day without sleeping (I was pulling my hair out !). He always slept well at night but was terrible during the day - I would stand for hours pushing the pram backwards and forwards across the living room. Until I finally realised it was overtiredness - once I twigged the signs he was brilliant - often had 2 2.5 hour naps in the day and still slept all night.
