When can you give cuddly toys?

DS is 4 months. When he's dropping off to sleep he wakes himself up by fiddling with his hands, taking out his dummy etc. he can't seen to self soothe by putting his hands in his mouth it just wakes him up. Occasionally when he stirs the sane thing will happen and he'll wake himself up. At the moment he's in a co-sleeper crib so I hold his hand whilst he falls asleep which settles him and sometimes this works when he wakes up at night.

In the carseat I give him this rabbit my mum made. It's a special breathable baby wool and it's got long thin arms and legs which are the perfect size for him to hold. This settles him as he seems to want to hold something in his sleep to stop his hands fidgeting.

I know the SIDS guidelines say that babies shouldn't have cuddly toys in their crib but how long is this until? He's moving into a cot at around 6 months and whilst he'll probably still be in our room I don't think it'll be as easy for me to give him my hand at night. Also hoping to start putting him to bed earlier. I think having the rabbit will help settle him but wasn't sure when it's considered safe to give them a toy in bed.
Thank you!

No idea what the answer is to this but I really went to know as well so watching with interest.

Im sure we gave dd a soft toy as soon as we stopped swaddling her (maybe 5months?) We introduced it thinking if she grew fond of it we could swap it for the dummy but that didnt happen and now she relies on both.

We picked out (from the massive pile of teddies gifted at her birth), a Jellycat Brand one, a Mouse. Only wish I had two as we are rather worried we will lose it. She is 2 now and he is her best pal Grin

Ours slept with a jellycat bunny from 4 or months. (It is suitable from birth). It really helped with his sleeping and now at 17 months he won't go anywhere without it.

Not sure what the official answer to the question is, but DS is now almost eight months and has had a JellyCat bunny since six months when he moved to his cot. I felt it was safe as he can move himself or the bunny away when he wants/needs to.

If you're concerned there are breathable baby cuddlies out there - I think they are made by the same company who make the cot bumpers. Not AirWrap, they're American, but Safe Dreams or Breathable Baby.

Looks like JellyCat have got the market sewn up!

Thank you! The rabbit his granny made is all breathable wool and stuffing specially for newborns so hopefully that'll be fine. The advantage of that is that if he gets attached and then loses it granny can just knit another one!

DS is 6 months and does the exact same thing as your little one.

Since 5 months we've been cuddling him up with a Maileg fox at night time to stop him from wrenching his dummy out when he's falling asleep. It's about half his size, but very light, skinny and not fluffy and we put it upside down so he can fiddle with the legs and tail instead. We then put it to the side once he's in deep sleep.

I'm not sure if it's the correct thing to do but it's working for us and i'm not worried.

My twins have a cuddly toy and comforters in their cots. Jellycat bunny, and 2 other comforters. Both had the comforters from around 4 weeks and the Jellycat bunny from 12 months.

Each morning DT1 hands me each one to kiss, is very cute Grin
