baby slerping on belly

my baby is 16 weeks old and has over the past three weeks gone slightly bonkers with regard to sleep and rather than settling in my arms was taking longer and longer and then waking as I put him down. I tried getting him to sleep in the cot on his back but he just got into a total tizz...I then read its easier for babies to fall asleep on theit fronts (patting his bum and singing) so I gave it a go yesterday and it worked sleep in minutes a miracle....I then panicked about sids and flipped him woke him up and put him to slerp through rocking.

skip today: He is now asleep on his belly again and I dont know what to do should I flip him now? in a bit or how risky is it getting him to sleep on his belly until he wakes for a feed...but then do I put him back to sleep on back or front?

He is my first baby and I dont want to do anything stupid.

Right, the advice for reducing the risk of SIDS is to sleep on their back.
I had a baby who would NOT settle other than in my arms, and transfering onto his back woke him without fail.
We had non of the other risk factors for SIDS - normal birth, at the right time, no smoking house, new mattress etc, and took the decision me getting some sleep was better for us as a family than me doing nothing but doze, as I was cosleeping.
It worked for us, but it did add a risk factor.

Thank you for letting me know your experience it helps. I don't know anyone who does this and so interested in all opinions.

Also sorry about all the slerpings....I obviously mean sleeping Wink

I think there are a number of secret tummy sleepers, but a very small number who will admit to it.
There are also ladies on here who have lost babies to SIDS. I'm sure they would advocate it is never worth the risk

I'm certainly no expert but two things spring to mind.
Check & see what your HV says & also if you do decide to keep doing it you can purchase a movement sensor monitor like the one angel care do which goes nuts if your baby stops breathing. It's very very sensitive but can give peace of mind.

we had the same situation at the same age. The hard.thing for me was I couldn't find actual data to use to make an informed decision. Also you can find out all you like but at the end of the day there are 2 outcomes - they're fine or they're not. One thing I did read was that the risk is higher in an occasional tummy sleep than regular tummy sleeping.

We also tried patting him to sleep on side and gradually rolling onto back, that worked for a while.

thank you for your thoughts - ive weighed it up and have flipped him in his back. I can't take the risk with something so precious. thank you thank you.
