Weaning off the dummy using the gradual removal technique - how???

It's just so hard to remove! I think I must be getting the timing wrong - either doing it too soon or too late (sometimes he has so quickly gone to sleep with it in I've not managed to remove it).

The No-Cry book doesn't give any indicative timings - i.e. how long you leave it in to soothe, and whether you put it straight back in as soon as they cry (assume so).

Any advice? Reason I ask is that DS is clearly going through the 4-month sleep regression (may not be the time to wean anyway) and while the dummy is helping him go to sleep in his cot during this unsettled period, it's also not helping ensure he sleeps well (wakes up easily when it falls out; needs it if he wakes up after a sleep cycle)... He's not been dependent in the past and I'm concerned about creating more of a dependence for survival reasons now, and then making weaning harder.
