Did you sleep in the baby's room the first night they slept there?

DD is moving to her own room as soon as she's got over this cold. She's 6 months.

My mum suggested I sleep in there with her the first couple of nights in case she wakes and panics at being on her own. DP thinks it's unnecessary. I can see it from both sides as she's always slept in a room with us but she's going to have to do it sooner or later so not sure if the two nights will help since ultimately there will come a night where I'm not there.

Should say she does sleep through consistently from about 8pm to 8am and has done since 2 months. So I'm understandably worried about all this changing if I bugger up the move to her own room.

Am I overthinking this?

No, we didn't. We moved DD into her room at 28 weeks by herself.

if you're worried about the move then keep her with you?
i didn't move mine until i felt happy they'd be ok in their own room

No.

And he went into his own room aged 6 weeks. (This was in the late 90s )

I feel she will be okay tbh. I'm not uncomfortable about moving her to the room and actually suspect she'll manage okay but just wondered if sleeping in there with them was the 'done thing' or if just doing it one night was normal. I take it your baby didn't get worried when they woke up in the morning stargirl?

OP, I'm afraid we were still coping with poorly controlled silent reflux at that point. DD slept for about 40 minutes then screamed for 4-13 hours without another sleep. It was tough going. Moving her had no impact - for better or worse. She took her first daytime nap EVER at 25 weeks.

We saw a consultant at the hospital when she was 7 months who sorted out the meds. 48 hours later she slept 12 hours Grin Woohoo!

Aww that sounds rough stargirl but I'm glad it was all sorted :)

Nope. I started by testing her in there for day naps though. I was going to phase it in slowly but she was immediately fine so went straight to full nights in her own room.

We all slept much better as a result actually.

We kept putting off the move for fear of upsetting things. But then DS was teething as well as becoming increasingly uncomfortable due to his crib mattress not being thick enough. One night he was particularly restless and resistant to lying down in the crib but immediately started drifting off when on our bed. All of us were desperate for sleep that night so we took a chance and moved him into his cotbed at about 2am.

He was used to being on his own for naps but that was in the crib in our room. So I really worried how he'd take waking in his own bed in his room. To be honest, I'm not sure he even noticed. Haha.

I moved my dd into her own room 3 nights ago and i didnt sleep in there with her. She doesnt seem to panic when im not there but i make sure that i go into her pretty quickly once i hear her crying. Shes 5 months but had outgrown the crib she was sleeping in and we couldnt fit the cot in our room. Hope it goes well for you, i was worried too, but my little one wakes for night feeds so i didnt really have anything too good to ruin!

MrsMaryCooper · 09/11/2013 20:28

Yes I did, He wasn't bothered though.

TeaOperated · 09/11/2013 20:54

I didn't, and we moved her at 4 months because we were all waking each other up at night and the lack of sleep was making me very, very down.

What we did do was put her in her cot for naps for a week first so it was familiar - it worked, she was fine, and she started sleeping through habitually for a while (til colds and teething spoilt it!)
