If you swaddle your baby...

...can you do it when they are awake or have just dropped off, or do you have to do it when they're deeply asleep? We've been swaddling DS since he was one week old, but last night was fairly typical - got him swaddled and down at 11, then he woke up at 2, at 3.30 he was asleep but it took 3 goes and half an hour to get him swaddled without him waking up and trying to fight his way out. 50 min later he was awake and I took him into bed for the rest of the night. I wondered if this was typical, or what else I could do to help him to sleep in his crib. I don't want to co-sleep all night as it's not massively comfortable and I'd like to go back to sharing a bed with DH at some point!

Have you tried swaddling him when he is awake but tired/drowsy and then putting him down in his crib and seeing what happens?

That's the thing - swaddling when awake results in Houdini baby fighting free!

What do you use to swaddle him with? I use a 'woombie' for my LO and it's just a zip up the front (I'm sure there are plenty more brands that are similar!) Even if she fights me, it's easy to get her in it!!
Dreading when I have to go without the swaddle now lol!!!!

Maybe your LO is ready to go without. DS remained swaddled for ages (about 8-9 months) because he just couldn't sleep without it due to his startle reflex. First he started breaking free due to sheer size rather than resisting the swaddle. We were using small cellular blankets and just couldn't get a good fit anymore. Problem solved by buying huge muslins which were surprisingly warm. Then when he started properly resisting it, we tried him with sleeping bag, which was only partially successful as he'd still wake up. Then we stumbled on a happy medium... putting a muslin over his arms and slightly tucking it in. Only enough to hold the arms til he nodded off. For some reason he was reassured by a little bit of weight on the arms.
