New cot mattress for DC2 - did you really get a new one??

As above really....

I know they suggest a new mattress for every child, but really how many people really replace them?!

Part of me thinks we should, DH thinks it's a waste of money. The mattress has also been covered with a water cover, isn't damaged in any way. It's been airing for months.

Replace or keep?

We used the same mattress.

readysteady · 04/11/2013 12:26

We used the same for our 3. Clean and looked after x

I got new ones for DC2-both for the moses basket and cot.

DC1 had reflux so was sick a lot. We had mattress protectors but still, I wasn't thrilled by the thought of all the germs breeding in there.

Also SIDS scared the bejesus out of me. If buying a new mattress lowered the risk even slightly then it was worth it.

Most people in my social circle have bought new matesses for second and subsequent DCs.

NoComet · 04/11/2013 12:57

No!
Borrowed crib, with very odd sized mattress, couldn't get one (crib since been use for various other children, including DD2)

Cot mattress total sealed with a washable cover, so it was pointless to replace it.

Also cot was never stored, so very unlikely to have grown mold etc.

SoonToBeSix · 04/11/2013 13:08

Yes I did , I wouldn't risk SIDS for a few pounds.

daughterofafarmer · 04/11/2013 13:16

Cot and mattress have been keep in the nursery. Well ventilated dry room. DD wasn't a sickly child at all.

Not sure. Mmm.

yes, new mattress each time.

dc1 had a new cotbed/mattress.

by the time dc2 came along, said mattress had been in constant use for over 2 years with added pummelling and jumping since dc1 was a toddler Grin

dc2 used the cotbed (both as a cot then a bed - she was tiny!) for 4 years.

so by the time dc3 came along, we thought a new mattress was due, tbh.

I also got a new mattress for the carrycot/moses basket each time, though, and they hadn't had extensive use. the 'what if' was too big a question for me.

Just bought a new one for DS2 due in 4 weeks mothercare have a deal on got a nice one for £75 but lots cheaper. Not worth the risk to save a couple of quid in my view

daughterofafarmer · 04/11/2013 15:32

Just double checked the price and I'm going to order a new mattress. It was only £40 ish quid from JL. Which frankly I could easily spend on a snow suit or a new pair of shoes for DD.

My question now is: what happens to the old mattress? Should I call women aid or something similar?

Yes. But knowing this in advance both were the cheapest foam ones in the kiddycare range. I need to buy one now for dc3 but notice the guidance is less strict on the new mattress thing than it was when I had dc2.

They are kept under dd's bed now and used for den building and as extra bed areas when the have sleepovers with all the mattresses on the floor.

For the past 4 years I have been meaning to make covers to use as large floor cushions.

killpeppa · 04/11/2013 15:45

mine were so close we need new ones as still in use.

DoudousDoor · 04/11/2013 15:49

Hmm. We hadn't even considered replacing to to be honest.

But DS only slept in it 6 months at most as he was moved into a single bed at 13 months, was in a moses basket until 6 months and spent a lot of time co-sleeping with us!

Must see about airing it a bit better though. it's currently in DS' bedroom but still with a sheet on it...

Chopsypie · 04/11/2013 15:55

Yes but because DS had reflux so was a bit funky.

DH uses it in the garage as a cushion/knee support

champagnesupernova2 · 04/11/2013 16:04

I thught I had but realised when looking that we'd only done the moses basket and pram (didn't move DC2 to cot until 6 months)
now expecting twins who will share a cot, so have bought a new one now.
