that's it. two and half years down the line I am sick to death of getting up so early. 6.30 would seem like a glorious lie-in.

sorry katie, can you pop them in bed with you, they just might stay longer

didn't think anyone else was up oh I mean

katierocket · 23/02/2004 06:44

not a chance GenT - he just jumps about. Always has done. This morning I found him at 5.30am playing with the toilet...

OP posts:
GenT · 23/02/2004 06:59

oooh, how much sleep does he actually get then?

katierocket · 23/02/2004 07:12

goes to sleep about 7.30pm. We have, over the last couple of years, tried everything to change it and sometimes he goes until 6am. We've tried, keeping him up later, not letting him sleep in the day, letting him sleep in the day (to avoid overtiredness), blackout blinds, nightlights etc etc etc to infinity!

I just think he is one of those children that naturally wake up early
although if there is a way of stopping it that I don't know about I'd be eternally grateful.

Next thing I think is to try the clock in his bedroom with picture of clock next to it showing the time he can get up - then tell him that he can't get up until real clock is showing same time as picture IFYWIM.

Katie, have you tried putting a small bedside lamp on a timer in his room and telling him he can only leave the room if the light is on? you then time the light to come on later and later. This worked with my goddaughter although her mum had to take her back into her bedroom for a fw days, until she got the idea.

katierocket · 23/02/2004 10:53

might try that marialuisa thanks

so you were up as early as me then. i love watching the sunrise.

emmatmg · 24/02/2004 08:23

KR, we've got one of those too....actually 2 of them DS1 and DS3 are early risers. DS3 being the worst but he is only 5 months so can be forgiven. Like you 6:30 would be a lie-in.

I was the same when I was little so it's probably all my fault and in their genes.

katierocket · 24/02/2004 08:31

Emma - I think it's genes too - I'm not a good sleeper and I suppose children are like adults - some sleep well, others not so well but how do you manage with 3 and no sleep?!

misdee - rather not see it though IFYKWIM

glad to know I'm not alone though...

I can sympathise - only in the last couple of months has DS started waking up at the later time of 6am. I have been very tempted to try one of those Bunny clocks, where the bunny pops up at the specified hour, and tell DS no calling out / leaving room until then. Has anyone tried one?

katierocket · 24/02/2004 09:05

Azure - how old is your DS? I have heard about the bunny clocks but not sure where to get one.

do have a look at the stair gate in the other thread, it will fit your doorway

Azure · 24/02/2004 11:21

DS is the same age - 2 1/2 years. I'm sure I've seen bunny clocks in the Great Little Trading Company catalogue - unfortunately the website appears to be closed for updating. I like the idea about the bedside light with timer.

hercules · 24/02/2004 11:25

there are sleep experts who you can get refered to. I havent read this thread through but I know I couldnt get up at that time everyday so would try to find out about one.

pamina3 - the first 2?!! oh no, I was hoping that should we ever have another one I would be definitely due a sleeping through from 6 weeks variety.

OP posts:
emmatmg · 24/02/2004 16:16

KR, I survive with 3 on little sleep by applying a good foundation and powder to cover the dark circle and hope no-one notices

katierocket · 24/02/2004 16:18

3? OMG!
I think he may be an only child.

Just to resurrect this, DS1 (age 3) is now proud owner of bunny clock and star chart. Slight hiccup on Day 1 as bunny didn't wake up On Day 2 DS1 confessed to having woken bunny up himself, but since then, success!

The main downside is that clock is obviously a 12 hour device, and really you can only set it for 11.5 hours or so after bedtime (or creep in later to change it...)

karen99 · 08/04/2004 16:30

That's great 150% ! Where did you get the clock from in the end?

150percent · 08/04/2004 19:55

Great Little Trading Company - I think that they are www.gltc.com. You might even get a mumsnet discount if you have a hunt - can't remember whether they're a partner or not...

kiwisbird · 08/04/2004 20:09

katie we did the alarm clock thing and set it at 6.30 at first then to 7 he could see it from his bed... explained that it was ok to read and play quietly and that he would be rewarded with lots of happy mothering if he could keep to it...
It really worked and when we were a bit pissed one night we VERY cruelly put his clock back and left a breakfast snack on his bedside table...
He stayed there and we took hm to toysrus and lavished him LOL he has been brill since then

ragtaggle · 13/04/2004 08:58

Just to empathise. This seems to be mine's waking up time too. I feel I can't complain at this stage (6 mths) as it's the first time she wakes up after going down at seven. But it's really starting to grate! I think mine is woken up by the dawn chorus outside her window. But there's not a lot I can do about that except go out wiht my shotgun!
