hello.. my baby is 9 weeks old now.. she sleeps pretty soundly at night waking up for a feed after 4 hours. but during the day it is impossible to put her to sleep. she seems tired and does sleep in my arms or during feeding but as soon as i put her down in her cot she wakes up and cries. she sometimes is interested in playing and sometimes seems irritated.. plus she puts her hands in her mouth all the time even right after feeding.. is she supposed to have these sleep patterns? I am sorry for the long post but being a first time mom i am pretty worried that my baby isn't getting enough sleep.. In need of advice..

My little girl is 12 weeks and her hands are constantly in her mouth, I thinks it's normal! She's discovered her hands and wants to explore them (with her tongue!)

And she's the same with napping, she now refuses to nap anywhere else but in my arms, swaddled. Normally I lie with her snuggled in on the settee and when she's asleep I can wriggle away and leave her for a minute, surrounded by a fort of cushions and a big furry quilt!

I used to get annoyed that I couldn't get anything done, and it makes going out for the day a pain because she won't stay asleep for long in her pram, but now I'm a lot more accepting that I won't get anything done, and think of it as a good excuse to sit on my bum all day!

Pretty soon she won't need or want me for naps so I decided to cherish this time and enjoy it Smile

You could try putting a hot water bottle in the cot and then replacing it with the baby so she doesn't get woken by the change from warm arms to cool sheet. If she likes rocking/bouncing then you could try putting her in a bouncer. But little babies do want to be close which is only natural, my ds is 6months and still has almost all his naps in a sling. Does she go to sleep in the pram? If you're desperate for a rest you could take her on a walk to get her to sleep in there and then go home while she's still asleep if that's an option. Their sleep is still likely to be pretty random at that age but it is important that they get enough in the day, as Sammie says, if the worst comes to the worst and she'll only sleep in your arms at least you've got an excuse to sit on the sofa all day!
Oh and ds got really into his hands at that age too, shouldn't be anything to worry about :)
