When do kids start to sleep-in after later nights?

Following on from the 'strict bedtimes' thread, can you tell me if ds will ever start to sleep later after late nights?

He's nearly 7 and has a usual bedtime (light out) of 8:00 p.m.

He always wakes between 6:30 and 7:00, I seem to have bred a lark, altho' dh and I are owls.

Last weekend was my sister's 50th birthday, so on Saturday night he didn't get to bed until half past midnight. He was still up by 7:15 a.m.

Sunday night I got him to bed at 9:00 p.m. (altho he slept 2 hrs in the car on the way home). He was up by 6:45 a.m.

I've struggled for earlier nights on Monday and Tuesday because he is obviously tired, so why doesn't he just sleep later?

I am dying to know the answer to this too! Ds never lays in after a later night!

DD is 4yo and if she has a late night she does sleep in. She tends to sleep for about 11 hours (10-12 generally) regardless on when she goes to sleep. For example, on holiday in Florida she was rarely in bed (or rather asleep) before 10pm, but she was then sleeping in until 9ish. She hates been woken up too early!

DD pretty much always has. Maybe it is just down to individualities rather than ages.

Mine always have done

They don't have many late nights unless we're away (they're 3.9 and 23mo) but if they do have a late night, they sleep in. And if they're particularly tired for some reason, they quite often sleep until 8.30-ish. And even when they wake up early, they amuse each other nicely until we get up. The 3yo pulls his chair over to his brother's cot and reads him stories

Ner ner ner ner ner!!!!!!!!!!

my DS is like yours clumsymum.
Late nights dont make any difference at all to his wake up time, if anything they make him wake up even earlier!!

Mine do after about a week of consistent late nights. So if we go on holiday and they're up past 9.00 every night, they will start to sleep in to 8.00. But for the odd late night they just wake as normal.

my ds ia still young (20 monts) but 10 days of 9pm bedtimes while on holiday in Italy this year still had him waking up at 6am and as the holiday went on this got nearer 5am !!.

Yet on our week holiday in the UK with dh, ds and me only - we decided that we would work around ds's routine (not easy to do in Italy with all the family etc) and it was fantastic. He was asleep every night by 8pm at the latest, had 2-3 hr naps each day and woke between 6am and 7am each day - getting later as the week progressed. In his case sleep realy does breed sleep which meant this was the best holiday I have had with ds - lots of rest and lots of fun !. On the whole though he dosn't sleep late if he goes to bed late - He has certainly never slep as late as 8am in his life (Well maybe as a tiny newborn)
