4 week old up all night, screaming & writhing

This is quite out of character - my four week old DD has spent the whole night tonight awake, and crying incontrollably, even when being cuddled, which is usually a sure fire way of settling her. She's quiet if I give her a dummy (which she can usually take or leave) but starts screaming and wriggling about again the minute it falls out! I've tried all the usual bedtime stuff, swaddling, white noise, she's changed, fed, burped etc.., she's been awake now since 9pm, give or take which I know can't help... Any insights or tips?!

Hi Something, really sorry to hear that, you must be at your wits end....

I don't really have any suggestions but am awake feeding my 6 day old and didn't want to leave you unanswered.

It's so frustrating and worrying when you don't know what's bothering them and are so knackered...

If it's out of character, maybe it's a tummy ache or something. Got my fingers crossed for you that she settles.

Thank you, nice to know there's others about in middle of the night, or nearly dawn now I guess! She's finally nodded off on the sofa next to me, all wrapped up - fingers crossed she stays asleep! Will have to see how things go tomorrow, tummy ache may be a factor... Hope your new LO gives you some time to rest!

The writhing makes me think possible reflux? Does is get hiccups a lot? Posset/vomit a lot after a feed Ben a long time after?

I hope she is OK now.

DD had this and it ended up being a Urinary Tract Infection. I didn't even know babies could get them.

How often is she feeding? Is it the four week growth spurt and she needs feeding more?

My DTs have reflux and they normally suffer most late evening, by the night time they're fine, but I don't know how common this is.

Hi again, hope you and your daughter are ok. It's almost a relief when the sun comes up after a night like that as you can stop all the tryin

Oops trying to 'get to bed'... All the best tonight, I hope it's a one off and she isn't poorly.

Hi, something and sorry to see you've had such a dreadful night.

Has your baby been unwell? I wonder if she has an ear infection, as this makes it painful to lie down flat.

If I were you, I'd take her to the GP on Monday just to get it checked out.

SomethingLovely · 13/10/2013 10:26

Thank you everyone for your replies! I will take her to get checked out at the GP, especially if tonight's the same... I was wondering about a growth spurt as she's def feeding a bit more, and yes she does hiccup quite a bit, but never really sick so if it's reflux perhaps it's the silent kind (think that's the one with no sick?). And I'd never heard of UTIs in babies & ear infection hadn't crossed my mind! I'll try to observe even more closely today, see if I can spot any symptoms... She's been good as gold since 5am though, like butter wouldn't melt bless her!
