DC won't sleep in cot, AIBU to ditch it completely?

DS (8 months old) won't sleep in his cot but will happily sleep on a cot mattress on the floor right next to his cot. Hmm

It would create much more playing space in his room if we could just get rid of the cot. Would it be unreasonable to ditch the cot completely keep his room child-proofed and the door gate on the locked, and just let him sleep on the mattress/floor? Is there any reason he actually needs a cot bed??

Has anyone else done this? If so, how did it go?

At the moment this seems like a brilliant solution...is that because it's 4.50am and I'm sleep-deprived, or am I on to something good?

Possibly relevant info - DS crawls, cruises and climbs. He is also a very curious little boy. The shelves in his room are all hung way above reach and there's a sturdy gate on the door. The mattress on the floor would be the only 'furniture' in his room other than toys (board books, box of blocks, container of cuddlies, etc) - everything else is either out of reach up on shelves or in his closet with the door latched shut.

AIBU?

Yanbu. Do whatever works for your family. You have taken every possible safety measure. Ds1 had to come out of his at a very young age as he would fling himself over the top if utGrin

I have seen lots of blogs where the lo just has a mattress...Montessori blogs I think? It is meant to foster independence I think? Go for it!

We got rid of our cot when ds1 was under a year. He is now two and sleeps in a bed. We swapped the cot bed for a single bed as dh and I are both tall. We wanted to lie and read stories and occasionally cosleep. It has allowed us far more sleep than when we had the cot. Good luck.
