baby outgrown moses basket - travel cot solution

so my lovely baby has grown out of his moses basket at 8 weeks. He now wakes himself up when he moves so we need a solution fast!

We need to keep him in our room until 6months so can't yet move him to his "big cot" however we only have a small room and the cot doesn't git in there. i also don't want to cosleep. so I'm thinking the solution is a travel cot and to get s travel cot mattress to go with it.

my question is had anyone done this? Are any travel cots better than others? What shall I look for in a travel cot gor everyday use?

many thanks in advance x

We had the same problem with DS. Ended up getting this which worked pretty well. The mattress isn't much cop but found a place on eBay that would make any size mattress for under a tenner.

Hope that helps! It won't be long till he's big enough for his cot bed Smile

Matress/camp bed in nursery.? He could go in his cot then, travel cot mattresses are very hard and not really comfortable for long term use.

We've just done this. Our 16 week LO has outgrown his crib but the cot hasn't arrived yet and won't go in our room anyway, plus we're not ready for him to go in his own room. We have a travel cot and mattress and he's slept really well on it the last few nights - loves the extra space. We got the Red Kite one on Amazon. They have a deal for the cot, a mattress and fitted sheet on the page. The mattress is a good one, firm but substantial.

It's the Laura mattress we have.

Yep. I know a few people with big babies that used a travel cot for months. A cot is a cot, as ling as they are safe. The only down side is your back will ache from having to reach so far over!

Everyone that I know in real life just moved their baby into the big cot/cotbed in another room once they outgrew the Moses basket. In my case it was 12 weeks for both DC.

If you need your baby to be in your room for a full 6 months then yes a travel cot is probably the best option. You could put a soft blanket over the mattress and under a fitted sheet to make it a bit more comfortable.

Travel Cot mattresses tend to be very thin.

We did from 3-6 months as dd was still waking frequently during the night. We used the graco contour electra as it had a bassinet part which meant that she was actually quite high up and reachable from bed. Bought a foam mattress from eBay to use as well to make it more comfortable. Also meant that when we did move her into her own room (same as you - cotbed wouldn't fit in our room) we just moved the travel cot and she slept in that for the first few nights to get used to sleeping in her own room before moving her into the cotbed. Still use the travel cot for visiting family (minus the bassinet now) and it was well worth the money.

gallicgirl · 02/10/2013 21:38

We were in this position and used a travel cot from 2 to 7 months when DD went into her own room.
We got one with a changer mat on top to save my back.

NotMyChashkaChai · 02/10/2013 21:39

Just to add that dd slept very well in it with the additional mattress. If you're going to use the travel cot as a permanent bed for a while, I would definitely recommend buying an extra mattress as the ones supplied with the cots can be very hard.

Thanks everyone I've ordered a travel cot and mattress to arrive tomorrow!

I know you've ordered but I found the travel cot had the same footprint as the cot.

GrandPoohBah · 03/10/2013 09:46

I just put the cot mattress on the floor, tucked a little under our bed. We have a low bed anyway, so she couldn't go anywhere!

eclondon · 04/10/2013 20:27

thanks guys my little one is now sound asleep in a travel cot looking very small but much happier with his arms stretched out Smile

That's great Smile

We had the same problem as you. DD was very long so outgrew the Moses basket quite quickly.
Travel cot was the ideal solution for us, so that she could stay in our room.
As nothingsleft has said though, my back did feel it, bending down so far all of a sudden!
