Dummies - daytime only?

Has anyone successfully used a dummy for only daytime sleeps and not at night-time?

My 3 month old sleeps reasonably at night and we have worked really hard to get him to settle himself (and I don't mean CIO! - he just drifts off on his own usually) in the evenings and sometimes after night feeds.

However the day is a different story and he is a terrible napper - needs a lot of encouraging to go off and then usu only stays asleep for 20-30 minutes max. I have found it's a lot easier if he has a dummy but I'm afraid if he uses this a "prop" for sleep in the day he will start needing it at night too - and I'm not keen to be up and down all night putting it back in. Having said that my other daytime options are rocking in the pram, driving the car or feeding to sleep which are not ideal either from that point of view.

Sorry I know this isn't the worst situation on the sleep forum but it's my own little dilemma and just wondering what others' experience has been.

We managed this with ds1. He quickly got into a good routine at night & slept brilliantly but daytime was a different matter. He'd sleep in the pram or car which is great if you're out but not at home.
We were just really strict with how we used it. We'd make sure he was fed & sleepy then try putting him down, if he wouldn't settle I'd cuddle him,rub his back, sing to him, whisper & ssshhh him. If all else failed he had the dummy. We never had to give him his dummy at night. I found creating a routine around naps helped him, a bit like a bedtime routine.

Friends babies have had dummies at night & have said the dropping it isn't that bad as you just pop it back in for them & they learn to find it themselves.
Hope that helps.

we did this with both of ours.....had no problems at night but i used it during the day when grizzly and tired. Both mine became thumb suckers and thats another story all together

I currently use the dummy a lot during the day for my 10 week old DD. she doesn't sleep much at all during the day apart from 10 mins here and there on my shoulder. She tends to look for a comforter after her afternoon feeds so I giver her the dummy and she looks more content.
I find that once I give her, her last feed at about 8pm she's knackered. I do try to make sure that I put her in her basket when she's still awake though to ensure she settles herself.
