Does DD just need a lot less sleep than average, or am I doing something wrong?

DD is 10.5 months and I've noticed that she only appears to want/need to sleep for about 12 or 12.5 hours in every 24.

this is generally 2hrs of nap in the day (30 mins in the am and 1.5 hrs after lunch) and 10-10.5 hours at night (7/7.30 to 5.30/6)

However everything I read says she needs 14 hours sleep at this age.

She is incredibly active (the number of times I've been told "look at her go, she'll sleep well tonight" ) and doesn't show tired signs until she is exhausted when suddenly she is yelling and eye rubbing. If I put her down for a sleep before she is at this point she cries like I'm trying to murder her.

Anyone else have a child like this? Is 12 hrs really enough, or is she actually horribly overtired and I ought to try something different?

It sounds fine to me. Every child is different. She will probably change soon anyway once she gets walking.

DD didn't really do naps once she got to being about 6 months. She would have 30 minutes here and there but she slept through for 11 hours. When she got to the walking stage she started sleeping more in the day. Once she hit 2 she dropped to only one 1 hour nap. All my friends babies slept for a good few hours at a time every day. I was always so jealous as I never had time to be anything done while she slept!

Now DD is 3.10 and decided a few months ago that a really good long afternoon nap is the way forward Hmm this is a recent development since she stopped napping completely a year ago!

I have always just had the attitude of just go with it. As long as she is happy when she is awake then she is getting all she needs.

But stop putting red bull in her sippy cup Grin

"When she got to the walking stage she started sleeping more in the day"

This is what I wanted to hear, thank you! although I'd rather the extra sleep is at night please Smile

I should be more go with the flow about it but dd has a history of trying to live without any sleep at all so I can't really trust her to know what she needs iyswim!

Grin at the red bull - seriously, I have stopped drinking caffeine in case it's coming through in the breastmilk, and I've even asked the GP if my thyroxine medication could be making her hyper... MIL tells me DH was always on the go as a baby though so I guess it's his fault hereditary.

I'm obsessed by whether my DD is chronically OT or just needs less sleep. She's 18 mo and 12 hrs is good for her. Pretty much was at 10 mo too! She's full on all day but seems fine with it. I just wish I'd never fecking read the stuff about how much she should sleep! And she's my second so I ahould know better..

ah clearly there are other Duracell bunny babies out there! such do you remember what naps/night sleep your dd was having at 10 months?

V similar to yours I think. Up 5-6ish (although I was still bfing in the night so could sometimes boob her back); nap 9 ish for about 30 mins/ 1 hr if v lucky; then nap 1ish for 1 hr ish, or with a resettle 1 hr 30ish (or sometimes half an hour if unlucky). Bedtime 6.30-7ish (although she was going through an ages to resettle period as she is now so could go much later, say 8ish). Then up 1 or 2 times a night - probably taking a good half hour each time. And then sometimes a wonderful 4 times a night.

Sorry if garbled. Been on the Wine a touch..

LoreleisSecret · 11/09/2013 21:30

6am wake up call.
1.5-2hr nap in afternoon.
8pm-6am (10 hours although often broken)

Both my children have followed this pattern and are both very active in the day. I wouldnt worry Smile

My eldest is 3.5y and youngest is 18months. Smile

Righto! well at least it sounds like it's normal and not something I'm doing wrong. Think I need to move bedtime to 8pm somehow so that we get 6am rather than 5, maybe once she drops morning nap she will sleep longer at lunch and I can move bedtime.

Lorelei does your 3yr old still nap in the day? I had assumed these hyper type of babies would drop their naps early.

My DS (reasonably hyper and low sleep needs) dropped his at 2.9, although I'd had to cap it for some time to get a decent bedtime. He actually kept it later than many of his peers.

Unfortunately for us later bedtimes didnt mean later WUs.

minipie · 12/09/2013 09:15

ah thanks, well that's quite reassuring. dd does seem to need her naps so maybe she'll keep hers a while... Suspect you could be right about the later bedtime!
