Crying every time he lies down

ds is 13 weeks and has not slept well for weeks usually wakes every two hours and rarely sleeps during the day unless we are out in the pram or sling. This week he has started crying when I put him down if he has fallen asleep he wakes in minutes. I tried leaving him on his side and that didn't work. He is bf and feeds alot so I don't think he is hungry and falls asleep during feeding but not every time.
Any suggestions of what to try to encourage sleep ?

Hi,
my 6 week old wakes when I put her down too. The HV suggested putting the head of the cot up a bit, so it was at an angle, in case she had acid reflux. My Mum thought the cot might be too cold, so I wrap her on a blanket, settle her to sleep on me then put her down in the blanket. She'll sometimes go to sleep face down on my chest, then I slide her off, leave her sideways for a bit then put her on her back.
Still working on it really.

Could be wind? Even a baby sound asleep being held upright can be woken with painful wind within minutes of being put down flat.

Could be reflux? As angryprincess said - we put 3 books under the legs of the cot at the head end, kept our son upright for half an hour after a feed so the tummy has time to start digesting the milk. Also, laying him on his left side because it makes the milk less likely to come back up because where the oesophagus is located. Failing that, your GP can prescribe meds to help if it is that.

Re feeding to sleep - try to get in the habit of rousing him a little before putting him down, to get him used to the act of falling asleep in his bed. My HV gave me some good advice by saying that babies like to wake up the way they go to sleep so if he goes to sleep in your arms but wakes up in his cot he's going to be confused and upset, so much less likely to go back to sleep by himself.

marking my place in the hope of "the answer"! My DS is also 13 weeks and where he used to feed, wind and go back to sleep easily now he is much more likely to wake when I try to put him in his cot. I feed him in his sleeping bag. I know I need to work towards putting him down awake but at the moment he just cries and I don't have a way of soothing him without picking him up again. I feel like I spend the whole night pacing the bedroom floor rocking and patting!

I have been told today that the four month sleep regression can start at three months so I am hoping that might be it.

So long as it doesn't continue for a month or repeat in a month's time... 4 attempts to settle him this evening. Off to bed myself now for my couple of hours sleep before feeding time again.

Please get his ears checked.

Children with earache always have much worse pain when lying down, which gets better when they are vertical.

He seems ok during the day, goes in the pram ok and will lay on the floor ok it is just at night in his cotbed.

Things have not improved, daytime naps only happen lying on me every time I put him down he wakes up and he is still waking nearly every hour at night. Sad I wish I knew why I am getting desperate now.

My dd did this. Wouldn't sleep for more than 40 min stretches if that. She was just not comfortable lying flat on her back.

It's possible it could be wind, or silent reflux maybe. That makes it very difficult for babies to sleep, so try propped up at an angle.

In dds case it was stomach ache caused by suspected CMPI. Once on he right milk she slept beautifully but only if she was on her tummy.

It's not advised I know but some babies just don't sleep any other way.

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 15/09/2013 17:06

Oh and dd also had a really strong startle reflex. She woke herself up constantly with that to on her back.

My son was like this when he was a baby. We ended up taking him to a chiropractor and it worked a treat. After two weeks of appointments he was cured. It was a mixture of trapped wind and just helping uncurve the spine. It makes sense when you think of it they are all curled up inside you and then we lay them flat and they don't like it. Good luck.
