9mo first nap....how long after waking?

DS1 is nearly 9mo. He currently has two naps per day. One 2 hours after waking (so usually around 0830am) for about 45/60 mins, and then one at 1pm ish for an hour and a half.

I am wondering if it is still 'normal' for DS to be going down for his first nap just 2 hours after waking? A few of my friends have been a bit Hmm when I have mentioned DS having an 8,30am nap!

Will he start to stretch this time out in the morning? Will he eventually end up having it at 9am? Or 9.30? and what will this do to his lunchtime nap?

Am a bit worried cos he starts nursery when he turns 11mo, and I will probably be dropping him off at 8am, by which point he is usually getting grizzly. Will the nursery be used to babies going down for a nap almost as soon as they have been dropped off? Should I be trying to stretch him out a bit? - not especially keen to as our little routine is working quite well atm, and he normally sleeps through from 7pm - 6/6.30am. And I like the break his morning nap gives me! Means I can get dressed in peace!

My LO is 9.5 months, she has her nap at about 9, but to be honest I try to stretch her to it because if I let her nap too early, she wakes up really early like 5am. If she naps at 9 she wakes in the morning around 6.30.

2 hours after waking is completely normal at that age. By 11 months I expect he'll be staying awake a bit longer, but if not it doesn't matter, nurseries are usually happy to put them down whenever you want them to.

Hi Bot - think we've been on several sleep threads together with similar issues! My 9mo is the same. I'm just assuming / hoping things will stretch out by the time he goes to nursery.

Brighton, I'm interested in what you say about stretching for first nap as we have sporadic (actually, make that pretty regular) periods of early waking. I was wondering if that 'stretch to first nap' approach worked for anyone so your experience has given me the resolve to try it and risk a bollocking from DS if I go too far and he gets overtired. (are you in Brighton btw? I'm in Hove!)

hi brian, yes it does work to a certain extent, I even try to get to 9.15 but cant always. if I can stretch out, she wakes between 6.15-6.45. If I dont do it for several days in a row then we usually get up around 5.30 whih I find hard to bear..

yes we live in Patcham, used to live in Hove too! Smile

My LO is nearly 9 months and if he's had a good nights sleep he can be awake for up to 4 hours before his first nap. If he's had a bad night which is more often then not he will go back down about 2 hours after waking.

OP, we have the opposite problem - dd's first nap is starting later and later, which isn't leaving room for her second nap.
I would stick with what's working for you atm. If it aint broke . .

By eleven months he'll have stretched the first awake time by himself - dd is currently doing this at 9 1/2 months.

dd2 did this. It then moved to later unless we were out then after lunch (handy). Now it is fixed as after lunch at 19 months. Totally normal, just go with it but if u want to go out then do so, lo will cope
