Dcs waking in their sleep but cant see you?

Ds1 is 8 and sometimes wakes in his sleep as if having a bad dream. When i go in and tell him, it's mummy here, you're ok, i hold his hands too but he is looking directly at me but cant see me, other times he looks terrified of me.

It just happened with ds2 who is 4. I went in and he was looking all round the room as if i wasnt there but he was answering me when i said his name.

Is this normal for dcs? What are they seeing when they cant see me?

DS did this when he was having night terrors. They look awake but they're not. What helped with DS was getting him upright (with support) and making him wake up properly.

Night terrors.
They look awake, but they're actually not.

So they're seeing what is in their dream? Its a bit scary to see- i thought something was wrong with ds' vision the first time it happened.

Oh yes i always do gently wake them and get them relaxed to settle again.

DS1 (2) has started having these.

He actually gets out of bed and often screams 'mummy!' Over and over again but if I go near him he gets more upset as he doesn't know it's me :-(
I often keep repeating 'it's mummy, it's ok' and try and get to him because when he lets me hold him he often snaps straight out of it. It's a really horrible thing to happen though and he look on their face is pure fear and you feel powerless to do anything.
Hopefully they'll grow out of it soon.

I've had night terrors and the bit between being asleep and being awake is very scary. You're sort of aware of reality, but you're still stuck in the dream. Sometimes you can't move, its horrible.

Try and get him awake as quickly and gently as possible.
