Three week old sleeping patterns - just let them be?

My three week old used to wake only twice or max three times during the night to feed and go back to sleep. I remember thinking how lucky I was and how I'm sure it would all change one day soon :)

Perhaps it's the heat, but he's starting sleeping a lot during the day (except for waking twice, once for a nappy change and once for feed) he's been asleep since 3:30ish and it's now nearly 7:30. Yesterday was similar as for the past week or so and he was up maybe 5 times at night and just finds it harder to settle and go back to sleep at night, he wants to play.

I hope nobody thinks I'm moaning as I know many mums have bigger problems than this! :)

My question is, should I let him sleep when he falls asleep OR try and start creating a bedtime routine and a daytime one or is he really too young for this? I don't think I'd ever want to wake a sleeping baby and I think babies of this age will generally sleep/wake/feed when they want or more importantly need to. But maybe some mums out there have started sleeping training at this age and there is a way to do it.

Open to any advice :)

Just wanted to add that this is definitely a general wondering rather than a problem - I recognise at 3 weeks old I probably should leave him to it but curious to know if early sleep training has any benefit or if it will just frustrate and create a tired baby.

I'd leave him be. If he gas changed sleep paterns, it could be developmental, could be heat, could be both or something completely different.

I don't think there's anything wrong with having a bedtime routine already (just something simple - we do quick bath then a long feed in the bedroom with lights off and curtains closed). Also making sure you distinguish day from night, ie do night feeds in the bedroom and keep the lights off/low, in the day go out lots and make it bright/loud. I think that's all you can do at three weeks really!

Oh and I know some people recommend not letting babies sleep for more than four hours in order to feed them and to relieve sore boobs so if you want to wake him, do it!

I am sure I read somewhere once tht it's best not to let babies sleep through a feed cycle during the day. So for example, if your baby usually feeds every 3 hours during the day, try not to let him/her sleep loner than 3 hours during the day. This will help him know the difference from night and day. And in general I think with newborns the more you can help differentiate night from day, the more chance you have of getting some sleep.

Thanks all - he slept so much during the day yesterday and then woke every hour last night which he's never done before! Think I will do my best to teach him daytime/night time without ignoring his obvious needs.
