Newborn sleeping on us

Newborn won't settle in her basket so letting her sleep on us. Are we setting ourselves up for a disaster or is it ok in these early days?

How old is she?

She may not even realise she's born yet, so let her do whatever. Careful not to fall asleep yourself though.

It's more than ok. It's the best thing for you all. Your new baby has spent all her existence nestled in the warmth of your body and its the place she feels most comfortable.

this is a good explanation of the fourth trimester theory

Awwwwwwww I would love that again. She won't do it forever, make the most of it. As others say, as long as you are still awake it is fine. Get a sling if you want to be more mobile.

Looks at my stomping 3 year old and wonders if he wants to sleep on me.......

I think it's pretty normal - DS did this, DD's doing it now. As long as you can stay awake!

As DS got a little older I started working on putting him in his cot when he was only lightly asleep, then when only drowsy, and it all worked out fine.

FWIW I would have worn a sling but for an old back injury, to give them the closeness more often.

Don't worry about making a rod for your back. DD wouldn't sleep anywhere except on Mummy or Daddy for her first few weeks. I though it would never end, but she is 6 months now and very rarely sleeps on me, happily sleeps in her cot. I wish I'd known that 6 months ago because I worried so much about it! Just do what you need to do, try to relax and enjoy (easier said than done!)

I wouldn't worry about it, my youngest always fell asleep on me (and had some kind of narcoleptic affect and made me sleepy). She is most definately the best sleeper of all three, has self settled since a tiny and at the grand old age of 2.6 tells me when she's tired and wants to go to bed. Make the most of it, they're so lovely at this age (and it's a great excuse to not have to do anything Grin)
