Can anyone advise.

Baby isn't due until Oct but we have a cat who currently sleeps upstairs and I want to get him in to a new routine in plenty of time.

We are already keeping him out of the baby's room, but I've read that baby should sleep in your room for the first six months, is this true?

Two problems with this are the lack of space in our room for anything more than a Moses basket (ie no space for the cot) and the cat.

How long was baby with you before moving into their own room?

Baby should sleep in your room until around 6 months. Maybe if you are short on space you could research safe co sleeping or get a co sleeper bed. . . if you have a cat be very wary that it doesn't snuggle in with your baby as they can suffocate them plus hygiene factors.
As much as you love your cat now, when baby arrives the pets of the house seem far less important (i say this from experience!).

We have just shut the cats out since DD was born, they got used to it pretty quickly despite having slept on our bed and in our room for years previously.

I was obviously worried about hygiene and suffocation (although I have googled this before and never found any record of a baby being suffocated by a cat) but that actual main problem when the cats do occasionally get in is that they meow and prod her with their noses etc and wake her up.

It is recommended that baby sleeps in your room for the first 6 months or so. Mine is 6 months next week and she is still in with us.
It is a personal choice thoug, several friends moved the baby out after the first 8 weeks/12 weeks.
You'll definitely want them near you for a while so I should plan for that.
Start trying to keep your cat downstairs. You can buy special nets that go over the crib.

Having said that our cat couldn't get away from our baby fast enough! Grin
