14 wk old sleeping on tummy

Help/advice needed please. My DS2 was born at 31 weeks and is now 14 weeks old. The last few days/week I've discovered that he much prefers sleeping on his front. He sleeps much more soundly, doesn't cry in his sleep, doesn't wiggle around and doesn't spit up milk. I've been putting him down on his tummy for the last week and he's been a much happier baby, but he's also been sleeping in our room so I felt it wasn't too bad. He has, however, outgrown the moses basket, so we need to start putting him in his own room, as the cot won't fit in our room. Now I'm terrified of putting him down on his tummy, but worried he won't sleep properly otherwise. Is there any way to do it safely, or should I just forget it and insist he goes on his back? Any advice gratefully received...

My ds slept on his tummy from about 9 weeks and I moved him in his own room about 16 weeks.

You have to go with what you're comfortable with. I felt happy that he was ok - good head movement and slept in a sleeping bag so no worried about getting wrapped up in blankets.

Now a happy 2 year old and I'd be happy to do it with my next child if that's what they preferred, if sleeping on their back didn't work. My ds crawled very early and it certainly meant his head movement was very good early on Grin

My now 1 year old DS slept on his front from about 8 weeks. We got and angelcare monitor for peace of mind. It is about £70 but money very well spent IMO.

I know people swear by this but the evidence of increased risk if SID is compelling. I don't think I would risk it but obv you need to do what's right for you.

I didn't tell my health visitor that he slept on his front, didn't want to have to explain myself.

I wonder how many others have done the same (?) and therefore we all think that x no of children now sleep on their back when in fact they don't. Just musing really. I didn't let him until he could lift and turn his head though. I'm sure the risk for younger babies must be very high.

My DD slept on her front from 8 weeks for many the same reason as you DS. She was also in her own room and she has been fine and is still sleeping on her tummy.

I never told my HV (I get told off too much as it is) but I did tell my Dr, and she said DD'd be fine.

Do get an Angel care monitor if you're worried, they're a fantastic bit of kit

Thanks for the comments. hrme has very good head control and can lift his head and shoulders well and turn his head. Him being in his own room doesn't bother me as we did it with DS1 as he snored (!!) and he's now a happy 3 year old. I intend to keep DS2's baby monitor on all night, but think an Angelcare one may give me some additional peace of mind...

My ds slept on his tummy from 3 wks as he simply wouldn't sleep on his back for more than a couple of hrs. I know it's against all today's advice but I went with what my mom advised (she's raised 7 of us and does know what she's talking about) . As soon as he started rolling he'd roll onto his back in his sleep but I always put him to sleep on his tummy. Happy healthy 22 month old now. Follow your gut instinct but if your lo has good head movement that's reassuring and get one of those monitors others have mentioned here for some more comfort...

Ds did from 8 wks as he learned to roll over and always flipped onto his tummy
