How can I settle my 23 month old DD into her cot bed?

After a disastrous night last night i am wondering if I should have done something differently. My DD has never been a great night sleeper but obviously we always had the cot bars to keep her in. Her daytime naps have been very poor for the past few weeks and this is obviously contributing to nighttime waking. She did seem genuinely distressed last night with me putting her into the big girl's bed or maybe she was trying it on? Would a quilt set be better for her rather than a sheet and blanket? We thought maybe she can choose a quilt cover and like the bed a bit better. In the end I put her gro-bag on as I felt she might feel a bit more secure, but this just led to a strange shuffling sound a little while later as she traversed her room and came into ours, poor thing.

Is she too big for her cot then?

i think it just takes a few days. or weeks. dd3 (23 months) has just moved into a bed too and woke up scared in the night (it's a bottom bunk and she didn't know where she was). can you use the same bedding as in the cot, for familiarity?

When I put DD down for her nap yesterday she was making a lot of noise which I ignored for a long while, then when I went in I saw her sitting straddling the bars of her cot Shock She got herself back in ok but DH and I said that the time had come to move her as she could hurt herself otherwise.
I have used same sheets as her cot and usual blanket, same toys etc. She was actually helping to assemble the bed yesterday and we played in her room afterwards and she seemed to love it. I suppose that the rapid return approach is needed for tonight, is this straight from the off? I must admit that I stayed with her while she fell asleep in bed for the first time last night, but I think I merely compounded the problem.

Surely she couldn't get out of the cot if she was in her gro bag?

Ds went into his single bed a month or so ago and has only just stopped waking up scared in the night. Night light helped - and leaving his door open a bit so he knew he could get out.

DD does not go in gro-bag for day time nap and am concerned about her trying to get around in it at night, although I do leave landing light on for her. Anyway thanks for advice will try a nightlight too, have bought new bed linen we picked out together today so fingers crossed.
