Coughing/choking really affecting DS sleep (and ours!!)

Since starting nursery DS has a permanent cold/cough (been to docs etc and its viral has to run its course blah de blah). Anyway, after a few days of him finally getting better he's got another bloody cold. He's coughing lots when he's lying down and seems to be having trouble swallowing the mucus (sp?). We cosleep (reluctantly I might add) so last night I tried to put him up high against the pillows but wasn't having any of it. Also tried some albus oil on a tissue, and nasal spray. None of which seems to be work. Anything else I can try? Last night was bloody awful....he's nearly 10 months :)

My daughter used to get terrible coughs - in the end I found the best thing was a humidifier in her room overnight. (Make you sure you air it out well in the morning though or you get mould!) Argos sell them for about twenty pounds. Good luck, hope you all get more sleep soon!

Thanks Teacher. Just been to pharmacist and she said glass of water under radiator and don't have room too hot, no magic potions alas. I think humidifier is similar to the water in the room trick? hmm I'll check.

Yes it is more or less the same thing. Apparently it's the water in the air that helps? I don't know, I just noticed that when my daughter came in to my (very steamy) bathroom as I showered her cough stopped! The other thing I've heard is try putting damp towels or drying washing in the room - again similar effect. We had the same problem with nursery and endless bugs so I sympathise!

The other thing my mum advised me was that small children can't cough up the mucus as not strong enough? Not sure but she used to turn me over, lay me across knees with head down, and gently "drum" on my back. Allegedly this percussion helps shake it all loose, but I hasten to add I haven't read anything supporting this and she does have some rather "interesting" cures....!
