Becky is just 6 months old, and is the worst nappewr during the day.

She is usually rocked to sleep by DH when he is here, but he has just gone back to work after another 2 weeks off and she is having none of me at all.

Ideally i want to get her to put herself to sleep, so I have jsut put her in her cot, I know she is tired - she has only slept for 20 minutes since 9am and all she is doing is playing up there.

Do I leave her or not? Im stuck as to what to do! Jess may only be 21 months but i cant remember what happened with her or at what age!

What do i do if she starts to cry?

We had a rotten time with our DD until she was 5 months old and we used "controlled crying" to teach her to put herself to sleep. I know there are lots of opinions on this technique but we were at the end of our tethers. She used to wake up 1-9 times a night.
We kept going back to comfort her briefly every 5 mins until she fell asleep. 1st night it took 40 mins and left us really frazzled. 2nd night, 20 mins. 3rd, 5 mins. Now, we put her in her cot awake after her usual bedtime routine, say nighty night - which she recognises - and that's it.
If you do it, don't do it alone - it's v stressful and use a timer to help.

JARM I think you need to leave her to settle herself if you want to go down that road.
If she is really tired you might well find that after about 5 mins of whinging she's dropped off.
I recall dd doing that certainly, when I left the room in frustration!
You could always try settling her silently without eye contact, rocking or speaking, then go out again and see if she gets the idea?

have jsut gone up and put her dummy back in and left with a quiet "night night"

I really hope she drops off soon - she is so tired but wont let me rock her, she just claws at my face and scratches me!

WHY did I let DH do it when he was home?! She doesnt love me any more!!!

jessicaandrebeccasmummy · 03/05/2006 15:35

She's done it! She's asleep! After me going up and giving her dummy back, she has gone! HOOORAHHH

Will jsut have to make DH keep up with this!
