Extending naps - does it work?

DS is 7 months old and until last week napped 3 x 30 minutes a day. Coupled with waking frequently during the evening and always coming in with us at some point during the night, I'm being driven potty by lack of me time. So, this week I'm trying to crack naps. I've been putting him down for a lunch time nap and then trying to keep him asleep by any means necessary (all the no nos like feeling, cuddling, rocking. He doesn't need any of this when he goes to sleep usually). The theory is I think that he gets used to a long nap and starts needing it. Does it work? I'm on day 3 and while I can get him back to sleep, it tends to be on me, so I'm certainly not increasing 'me' time!

Am not sure tbh my DS is 7 months 1 week and he has 2x 1-1.5hr naps a day and he sleeps from 6.30-5am (trying to make it later).

I can only talk about my very limited experience which extends to DC1 (DC2 is a totally different sleeper). DC1 only ever napped for 30 mins, 40 mins was a luxury.
I tried everything you've listed and 'wake to sleep' nothing worked for us.

Then at 10 months she extended her lunchtime nap all by herself and started doing 1.5-2hours some days longer.

Time might be the only thing tat works.

Not helpful sorry but I do remember how much hard work it was.

At about that age my son was on a 3,4,5 routine. He's now 14 months and has dropped to one nap around noon. Yesterday's was 3 hours 😊

It did broadly work for me but wasn't a magic bullet. One big diff was I walked her in the buggy or baby bjorn to get her to sleep.

It did seem to work to get her used to a longer nap at the right time. And I think by taking her outside to walk round it made getting her to replicate nap in the cot easier. You might end up with a whole new battle around the transfer into the cot.

But yes in general it worked. Good luck

Thanks for all your replies. Heartbeep, I remember it said in the no cry sleep solution that some sleep problems resolve at around 10 months, so fingers crossed if this doesn't work I won't have too long to wait. Moose, DS is roughly on 2, 3, 4 although by 5.30/6 he is knackered and he's grateful to be in bed by 6.30!
Thanks Boxing Day. When I walk DS in buggy his eyes ping open after 30 mins and there's no amount of walking that'll get him back to sleep again. He only seems to go back to sleep in his room where it's dark with no stimulation.
Oh well, if I do it for long enough he'll hit 10 months and hopefully will improve anyway (and in the meantime he's a bit more rested than before).

I tried this around the same age & it worked as long as co-slept, cuddled or whatever but otherwise no. DS lasted taking long snoozes around 9-10 months too all by himself. They grow into I think Smile

Ok, good to know. At least there's light at the end if the tunnel!
