how long (roughly) after waking should you put them down again?

i was reading another thread re a 15 week old and people were saying to put them down 90 mins after waking.

what about when they're 5 months? I tend to put mine down between two and three hours after waking but think that sometimes they (twins) may be overtired.

I'd be interested to hear others experiences

At five months, I put my daughter to sleep around every 2 hours. :)

sharond101 · 28/02/2013 21:58

After two hours of being awake.

KatAndKit · 01/03/2013 22:19

I agree - 2 hours at that age, rising to about 2.5 by 7 months and 3 hours by 9 months.

melonribena · 02/03/2013 06:20

I put my just 7 month down 2.5 hours after waking

My son is 8 months and most people I know who have good napping and sleeping babies follow the 2,3,4 rule as we do and have done since our ds has been about 5 months. So awake for 2 hours then nap then awake for 3 hours then nap then awake for 4 hours and then bedtime. Sometimes for us it woke out a bit more 2,3,3 as our ds goes to bed at 6 then sleeps through to 7am

thelittlestkiwi · 02/03/2013 07:51

I was told 45 mins to 1hr 15 mins max and followed this till DD was at least six months. It worked a treat. I miss those days. Here in NZ they say that a baby who sleeps well during the day sleep better at night too.

But this link might be useful for spotting tired signs. Our HV's made me watch a video of them which was really useful. Yawning was one of the latest signs and they told me it mean't she was probably already overtired and therefore much harder to get to sleep.

thanks everyone, really useful advice.

kiwi, do you mean 1hr15 max of beig asleep?

OP posts:
thelittlestkiwi · 02/03/2013 09:14

Nope, max 1 hour 15 of being awake. I know it sounds crazy once I saw the tired signs I could see they were right, at least for DD. The main ones I used were jerky movements and not looking at my face. Once the signs were there I'd have her in bed in minutes.

Well actually i think my dtg might go down again an hour after waking sometimes!! dtb wouldn't though....the joy of having twins....

2 hours tops for my 18 week old. In an ideal world anyway! She is a short napper generally tho so sometimes 4 naps in a day because they're all less than 40 mins! In an ideal world too there is a 15 min wind down in dark bedroom before she goes to sleep so she is actually asleep by that 2 hour mark. Not easy with twins or juggling other kids tho!
My son was on a 2-3-4 schedule much more easily by about 6 months, in fact it was prob 2-3-3 because his second nap was about 3 hours Shock
Oh how different children can be!

ellangirl · 02/03/2013 13:17

Have you got twin boy and twin girls? How fab Grin

Loislane78 · 02/03/2013 13:28

Yep, agree with other posters. 6.5 mo here and we work to 2,3,3 or thereabouts.

Nancy54 · 02/03/2013 21:17

Yes Ellen it's lovely but tiring! And that really is the prob, they're different babies! Have been trying to get them to nap at the same time but dtg gets tired quicker and naps for shorter periods....

You might just have to try putting them down after 2 hours max for a few days and see if it helps at all. the girls might(!) begin to sleep longer if put to bed before they are overtired. My dd certainly sleeps worse when she is waking after 25 mins ish. How old are your boys and when do they nap?

Nancy54 · 03/03/2013 07:16

Ellan, I just have one set of 5 month old twins - a boy and a girl. Thank god I don't have twin boys AND twin girls! Lol

The prob is that I have been trying to get them to nap at the same time but as I said dtg is tireder befor dtb. If I try to put dtb down with dtg when he not ready, he won't sleep, so I have been trying to keep dtg up til dtb is ready but then she gets overtired. I think I might stop trying until they are on solids and we have a more structured day anyway.

Blimey I never knew about all this. I'm on my third! How on earth do you decide that the baby goes to sleep?!!! Is there a trick?

Mine spends most of the day on my lap, drifting randomly in and out of sleep unless we go out in the car or with the pram.

If I put him in anything that doesn't move, or actually anything in the house he just wakes straight back up again.

OutsideOverThere · 03/03/2013 07:28

he is 8 weeks btw if that makes a difference.

ellangirl · 03/03/2013 10:34

Blimey nancy, thought you were some kind of supernumeraries for a min there! Mind you, one set of non sleeping twins is enough to qualify for that accolade in itself IMO :-) my sleep fighting dd has just settled into some kind of daytime routine at 18 weeks. She wakes up 7 ish, sleeps 9-9.45/10, then 11-1.30/45 ish, then 3.45/4 til half 4 or 4.45. Bed no later than 6.45 but takes a while to settle normally. Night waking still frequent but really hoping it will settle down. What routine are you hoping for with your twins?
Outside- no magic trick, just clock watching! Look at troublesome tots website for guide to awake times here

ellangirl · 03/03/2013 10:35

Ha ha, supermum obviously!! Silly autocorrect Grin

Nancy54 · 03/03/2013 13:14

Lol! There is actually someone on mumsnet who has two sets of twins! Will finish this post later.....pooey nappy calls
