Naps naps bloody naps

I spend so much time posting and lurking on the sleep forum, I have become all obsessive about DS's sleep! Right now he's 10mo and am currently in the middle of a nap dilemma...

If DS sleeps through he wakes at 6am STARVING hungry and is really ready for a nap at 9am. Fine. I wake him from that nap no later than 10am. Now here comes the tricky bit... He's starting to REALLY fight his afternoon nap, was always pretty reliably at 1pm, today I put him in his cot at 1.15 and he didn't settle properly until 2.10 (think he dozed off right at the start and then coughed and woke himself up after about 5 minutes) we currently have a bedtime of around 6pm and he usually settles ok for bed. So I'll be waking him up from his afternoon nap by 2.45 latest (especially as we're going out this afternoon)
So in total he's getting 12 hours sleep overnight and about an hour and a half during the day. Is that enough?

Should I be pushing him towards only having one nap over lunchtime? Am I doing the right thing waking him from his naps? Should I just let him sleep as long as he likes in the morning and then have a cat nap in the afternoon?

Sorry for the barrage of questions! Any suggestions gratefully received!

Well, there will probably be hordes of different answers on this one but I always went with the 'sleep engenders more sleep' and I let small child here keep sleeping until they woke up naturally.
The daytime naps in total varied from one Sad to four hours Grin.
This strategy never seemed to interfere with the length of the night sleep (although admittedly we never did bedtime before 7 - 7.30pm). From that bedtime, small child generally would wake at any point from 6.30 to 8.30 the following morning.
Nowadays, at just over two, it is a consistent 6.30 - 7am wake-up no matter what time bed is though.

Well... Today he had a good morning nap in the car (45 mins or so, had to wake him as we got to our destination) he's had a busy day, we get home, put him in his cot for a nap. He settled for 15 minutes and is now awake again! Not crying, just talking, burbling, singing and crashing about. I just worry that it's not enough daytime sleep.

Well, at least he's having some 'quiet' time on his own without interaction from you, so hope he's now on his way to sleep.
