Weaning and sleeping, do they go hand in hand????

my DS is 18weeks old and ebf. He slept through from 4weeks old up until 5weeks ago when he started waking up once, sometimes twice a night for a feed. He goes straight back down afterwards.
Last week I started weaning him as I was told that this would help him to sleep through. 12 days in and he has baby rice for breakfast and pureed fruit for tea along with his usual feeds from me. He is loving the food and is a very happy baby however he is still waking in the night. Am I doing anything wrong?? any tips on how to get him back into the swing of things??
Thanks in advance Smile

It sounds like the sleep problems started around 4 months which is a well known 'sleep regression' due to a developmental leap. Try searching this site for 4month sleep regression. It could be helpful. Not sure about weaning as we're just starting at 6 months. Although my HV told me a while ago that many people mistakenly start food too early at 4 months cos of the sleep disturbances. Without saying if it would work. She didn't seem to have an opinion on whether it would help or not but said to only wean early if the dr said so. It sounds like the dr thought it would work in your case so many speak to him/her again to find out why they recommended it- is it reflux related. Might be worth asking the same question on the 'weaning' board. Good luck.

Didn't make a blind bit of difference to me I'm afraid. Think it's another one of those things they tell you to make you buy baby rice.

You might actually make him wake up more by weaning so early because you're making him take up room in his tummy with lower calorie stuff during the day, so he may wake more in the night for more milk to make up the calorie deficit. Solids making babies sleep more is an old wives' tale which, for reasons known only to themselves, is still peddled by misinformed HCPs and grandmothers (and baby rice companies Grin)

Made no difference in my experience, sorry! I think there are too many other factors.

ok, thanks all. Don't think Ill take the food away as he enjoys it. I bfax him the same amount as before. No reflux issues (luckily).
Will look into this sleep regression a bit more I think as it has been mentioned to me before Smile

My DD is 2 and rarely sleeps through the night so I can categorically confirm that sleep has f all to do with weaning.
