How much sleep is too much??

Taking a risk here - might get drummed out of MN by jealous, sleep-deprived mums...

I have a 5 week old baby (ds2) who sleeps and sleeps. He just about manages to stay awake for nappy changes and the odd brief roar about his windy tummy pain, but other than that he's hardly awake. What's a normal range for this age group? Is this sleepiness excessive and if so, what could it mean anyway? Poorly? Bored?

Maybe he's quite normal. I only have ds1 to compare him to, who barely slept 10 hours a day for the first few months (colic hell). I'm a bit twittery about ds2 as he ended up back in hospital when he was a week old with a UTI, so I'm on the look-out for signs of sickness.

(If it makes you feel better you should know that ds2 likes to be held all the time, so my back is killing me. And I paid my dues with ds1, oh yes).

DS is now 8 weeks and will stay awake for about 30 mins after a feed, sometimes an hour, (and between 5 and 7 often a whole two hours very fractious). A few weeks ago, about 10 mins after feed and that was about it.

Again, dunno if its normal, DD would have 45 mins sleep in the morning, and 45 in the afternoon if I was very lucky from day one. (Also paid my dues Wink)

DD is also 8 weeks old, its only in the last few weeks that she has started to be able to stay awake for longer periods, before that she wanted to sleep all the time as well. Some babies just need more sleep than others, enjoy it! Does he sleep well at night?
I find if DD is played with for a bit, she can stay awake for much longer without nodding off. I have been following the Gina Ford routine, and have found it really good.
